Anyone see the goal for Brighton v West Ham, where VAR looked at a possible handball ? I was more shocked that the ref didn't give a FK before that, for dangerous play when the Brighton player attempted an overhead kick with his foot right next to the defenders head. I think it's another that complies with "anywhere else on the pitch" it would be a foul. Is it me ?

I had similar thoughts but I recall in the earlier VAR days, might have been a Norwich goal, there was uproar in a similar situation.

It’s also a professional game. At the professional level, they often assume that the players have a high level of control. So what would be PIADM in the games most of us do isn’t considered such for the pros.

I do tend to think Mavropanos has probably lost out from being too honest, if he went down holding his head there I am sure it would be a free kick, probably even before VAR had to get involved.

he does actually kick him though doesnt he, so it's not piadm?
Are you sure? (and I'm not posing that sarcastically - I don't know, but the player himself doesn't even appeal for a foul from memory)

I think there was a very slight flick on the head. Still would constitute a mortal wound for most players though and I was very surprised he didn't make a big deal of it.

Well I'm not 100% sure! Only seen a single replay

If he appeals/feigns injury he deffo gets the foul

Shouldn't matter whether he catches him or not, or whether he feigns injury IMO. His foot was high and dangerously close to the defenders head

A cynical view but the only thing that matters is if the defender throws himself to the floor and holds his head. Every referee, player and fan knows that. Just appealing may sometimes work as well. But not going to floor is the easiest way to make the referee ignor a foul. And we all wonder where the cheating culture comes from.

The phrases often used here like "did anyone appeal?" Or "safe refereeing" further support my view.

But players are not supposed to appeal. They should be accepting the referees decision. IMO refs should be giving these as dangerous play, without any need to appeals for feigning injury. If they did, there'd be no need for feigning

on another note, if I was the manager, for £200k pwk i'd be expecting my CB to be putting his head there, not pulling it back !

There is a bit of mushy mess around PIADM and how it has to impact an opponent. The general context has been that the offense is when it impairs the ability of an opponent to challenge for the ball. (Though this has often been laxlynapplied at youth level, where there has been more desire to stamp out the dangerous activities,) The newest language of the Law, using the word “including,” created ambiguity around that requirement, and I have never seen anything official regarding the expectation. As far as I can tell, at the professional level, it still is an expected element, with the idea the players have very good control of their bodies such that what is dangerous for normal people is. Or as much so for the professional player. And there does seem to be even more latitude given to players trying to score or trying to stop a goal. Whether that should be the case is certainly subject to debate, but that seems to be what is expected at that level.

That's intense reply lol. So what are you giving in this situation ? goal or IDFK ?

I can’t access the link on this side of the ponds. Sounds likely tht in the games I do it’s n IFK and in the alternate universe in which I’d ref a pro game, I’d give the goal.
