The Ref Stop

Not paid for pre season game

As ever what seems the simpliest suggestion has flaws

plenty leagues have match fee split 50/50, so holding onto the match ball has no impact on the away team.

unless of course there is procedure where the away team gives the home team their share prematch, which of course is not ideal

The proposal I submitted to local association is still under discussion.
Team (s) BACS their match fee before set time on day, to league.
League then text/email ref to confirm money transferred
league then BACS to referee post match.
yes its an admin extra work for someone but times chsnge.
Here's your fee
Thanks

Seems a lot simpler to me - the passage of time doesn't guarantee simplicity!

The Ref Stop
Sure I've told this story before, but did a parks game one Saturday back in the day as what's now a level 6 (2 at the time*). Pitch was furthest away from changing room. Don't remember much about the game, certainly nothing that would piss anyone off (more than the usual, like... me existing).

But anyway, final whistle, trudged back. Showered and packed-up, came out of changing room block, everyone had gone and I still had the match ball because I took it to my room... and *I* was the one who got in the **** from County FA because I took it home with me (council-owned rec, no one else on site, presumably some old fella locked up in evening) before reporting it on the Monday. Mysteriously taken off a County Cup appointment I had for a fortnight later.

* had to walk backwards uphill in the snow to get there, played in black and white, etc

Yeah of course one individual step is simper. But I've had seasons before (pre-pandemic!) where I've done 6 or 7 matches in a month, paid for groceries and fuel on my card and then had £200 of cash sat in my wallet, which I've then had to go out of my way to either bank, or spend when I would otherwise use a card.

I've been handed cash before after having seen a manager go round players trying to collect £5 subs off enough of them to pay me, having to go backwards and forwards because most people only have £10 or £20 notes. Wouldn't it be easier to just collect subs monthly into a bank account by BACS and then pay referees directly out of that?

I've also had games where I've sent managers off (or spent the whole game being yelled at by them and probably should have considered sending them off!) and have then had to approach that person after to get them to give me cash. That's not fun when I could instead just text bank details to a secretary and wait for the money to appear.

There's a possibility of non-payment, sure - but that's the case with cash as well. And with cash the non-payment tends to come with a vigorous explanation of why they don't think you deserve paying, at least if they just don't bother paying via BACS it's much less confrontational.

Also the onus HAS to be on the clubs to pay the officials, not have the officials ask or chase it. I don't knock my boss's door on the 28th and go... "hey, about that 3 grand..?"

We made sure (at my club) that players pay subs into one of the three club accounts (Main, Subs, Fines), and soon as the ref arrives... transferred via phone. 3/10 say they'd prefer cash, in which case, cash is ready for them upon arrival (flat fee, no expenses). I bet we're the only team of the 34 in our league who do it based on what I've heard at away grounds over recent seasons.

Re; Big G above. Had that twice before. Late dismissal of home manager. I didn't even go asking. Thankfully one of the times the club secretary was there (and approachable) and paid. Second time, I just sent Club Sec an email after I'd got home. Both understanding of the situation, but it can easily go south.

. . . and that was when the LOTG required that the ball be returned to the referee at the end of the game😃

Flawed logic there - if "you couldn't spend cash anywhere" it wouldn't exist!
That was my point, as I said in Norway "hardly anywhere takes cash". So you can spend cash, but it is increasingly difficult to do so, and if the UK goes that way (which it will) would you want fees in cash when it is difficult to spend it.

I'm aware of one league that has mandated electronic payments only, but equally they come down extremely hard on clubs that don't pay within 48 hours of the game.
