VAR referred this but the decision stood.

Fair play to the lad who is the ‘victim’ here, he doesn’t throw himself to the ground or anything, and he shouldn’t have to for the outcome to be the same. It’s a shame the Motherwell player didn’t get the memo earlier on when he stepped on the Kilmarnock players foot and then rolled around like he’d been shot.

You can’t put your hand around or into someone’s throat. Simples.
Argument that it’s not enough to be violent conduct, but it’s an action that has zero place in the game and you certainly can’t say it’s incorrect. Not sure what VAR is doing sending the ref to see that again given he clearly sees it perfectly well in normal time.

Seems to be a trend if some shockingly bad VAR recommendations on the SPL.

Agreed but I don’t think that happens here. The hand goes in the chest (with minimal force) and I don’t think it’s really contact with the neck. I can see why the referee thought there was neck contact in real time and gave a red, but to stick with that decision after reviewing it shocked me.

I don’t agree, he starts the chest and lifts it up towards the throat. I think the commentators on the clip posted by DJIC are being very naive to suggest his hand slips upwards…

Not saying it’s a stonewall case of violent conduct, but for me it’s definitely not wrong to consider it. As @JamesL says, play silly games, win silly prizes

Agree. I dont think this is a red card myself but he has entered the silly game and won a silly prize. Who'd have thunk it.

Don't see why VAR recommended a review for this. A red is justifiable in law under VC - brutality for the action here. Possibly something over the comms influenced things, as there has tended to be comms between refs and VARs to confirm what they think they saw.

As the Laws are currently written, I'd find it difficult to justify a sending off here.

However, I'd like to see the neck/throat included in the caveat under violent conduct where any deliberate strike to the head/face with non-negligible force when not challenging for the ball is deemed VC.
