Hi all,

I'm a new ref, completed about 6 games so far.
One of my local Teams have asked me for an Invoice for the Match Fee, I mean I can whip something up but this isnt the normal is it?
I even charged them at a discount as I walk to the ground so just wanted to clarify £35 is fair?

Not normal in England.

When you say discounted fee what does the competition rules say about

A) how much the fee is

And

B) how and when payment is made?

Never heard of this before. I'd be tempted to give them your payment details via text/whatapp/email, confirm the match fee (as per the league rules), and ask for payment by set date. If they don't pay, go to the league. Even if the league didn't appoint you (which happens as some leagues expect home team to organise referee), you will have filled out something on the team sheet/results sheet that means the league can confirm you definitely did ref the match.

I've written out receipts before (including for one game this month), and you'll often be asked to hand in a match card once you reach higher levels. So while the use of "invoice" terminology is a bit strange, I wouldn't automatically assume ill intent because of it.

But as others are alluding to, how were you appointed and why were you deciding the fee? Most competitions have a set fee (which may include assumed mileage or specifically expect you to charge a set amount per mile for mileage) and you shouldn't really deviate from this. Even when doing friendlies, I usually just ask for their normal league fee.

I've never been asked to provide an invoice, such a thing is generally provided when the payer needs to know how much they owe the payee and for what services provided. For refereeing the fee should be detailed in the competition handbook, so cannot see why an invoice is needed. Similar to @GraemeS on rare occasions I have been asked to sign something to confirm I received the money, but that would be for the club to provide, not you.

If your league is an an inclusive fee, as most grassroots leagues seem to be these days, I wouldn't recommend asking for less as you walked to the ground. The fees are generally set such that for some games you will have low or even no travel cost, but others would will go much further, so it all balances out over time. If it is a fee plus mileage then obviously just claim the fee.
