I'd take a firm stance at the first dissent with a warning, then if theres another outburst, a yellow card. Let him know at the first dissent he makes.

The stepped approach is your friend. Also think about your dynamic peaks during match. That first warning to the coach - that’s a big ceremonial moment - you are interfering and for good reason - and you need to make it count - and not so much for the coach but everyone watching.

It doesn’t matter what you say really - the coach knows you are telling him to shut up. It’s all about your body language and how you portray the warning to the whole family. And the coach’s body language - you want him calm, quiet and attentive, at least pretending.

You have tools: the calm down hands, the yap beak hand gesture, the weighing-it-up-gesture, cutting the grass… use one or two of these while all eyes are on you.

Yes, agree with Steve above. I've had similar experiences many times. I now basically ignore all comments from coaches and pretend I can't hear them. Works pretty well.

Problem with this is observer's will have you and often you set the bar high regarding loud and persistent dissent.

I've started turning and facing the benches if I hear something and the game will allow it. I look for a clear offender and then I go book them.

Not going to win you the best club marks referee of the year. But it is an efficient way to deal with a problem.

I often find that dealing with the benches has a positive influence on player behaviour. On a couple of occasions players have actually thanked me for getting rid of the manager, they played better as a result and were much better behaved. One of them was a mid-season friendly, the manager came running at me at half time ranting and raving, I told him if he said one more word he wouldn't be in the dugout in the second half. Advice wasn't taken onboard, so I binned him (before cards could be shown to managers). At 2nd half kick off his captain said to me that I shouldn't start yet as the manager hadn't come back out, I said he won't be, he is sitting up there as I've sent him off. His reaction was can't blame you for that ref, he was driving me round the bend.

Also for the sake of the game, dissent should be enforced agianst. If you let it take place, it will spread as a sense that its OK to insult the referee and to try to play mind games with him. Its also ruinning your game you are reffing. Zero tolerance should be taken to halt dissent.
