Liverpool V Bayern

It’s defintely favourable for the first Home team. But these days where all the top sides have immaculate pitches and sell out stadiums, what really is the home advantage?
The biggest home advantage is the fans who lift the players games by chants etc...

To counter the argument for favourable for first home team, in case of a draw after 180 minutes and same away goal, the second team has the benefit of 30 extra minutes in home ground.

Yeah, its not about the ground, its about the number of fans you have at the ground. Some teams manage more fans in their away games than the home team (at least it sounds/feels that way). That pretty much takes the home ground advantage away from the home team. But it hardly ever happens if the away game is in another country or city.

Anfield, Etihad, Old Trafford, Emirates etc are all poor for atmosphere these days (apart from the huge games). Away ends are still buzzing but the home support at the big clubs is changing. Different era, different way of supporting I suppose.

The atmosphere was much, much better in the late 80s, 90s when instated going to football with my dad but along with that came hooliganism, rubbish facilities and racism/homophobia/sexism etc. It's much quieter at grounds now as everyone is on their phone but there's alot more families and diverse fan base attending. I prefer it the way it is now but purely in terms of atmosphere it's incomparible now

Better atmospheres in the Championship than most Prem games, @Ben448844 is spot on, Sky add canned noise, just in case some fans sing a hurty song and they have to apologise....

That's true, but is it really worth having an away goal rule because of the atmosphere? These are professional athletes after all. We don't have an away goals rule in any domestic league where they play home and away, so why in cup matches?

Good point and I have heard FIFA or UEFA are reviewing the rule.

The odds for a home team winning the tie overall will be shorter following a 0-0 when away goals count, unless there are unusual circumstances

No they don't. They have the ability to cut the pitch side microphones at specific sections of the ground so if any dodgy chanting starts they can stop it being broadcast, or at least reduce the volume. That's why you hear something and then it suddenly goes quiet, but they aren't always fast enough hence the commentator sometimes having to apologise on air.

Wembley Stadium emits the atmosphere via their splendid surround sound system. Pitiful
