Hi All

Hoping someone can provide some answers to the following queries myself and a couple of colleagues have.

1. What is the minimum number of games as a L4 to be considered for promotion to L3 (both middles and AR if there is a requirement for min number on both)
2. Assume that if invited to an assessment day that attendance is mandatory otherwise will not be considered for promotion
3. The fitness test on the Assessment day - if you fail this do you automatically miss the chance for promotion?
4. If you pass the fitness test on Assessment day and subsequently get promoted to L3 do you have to do another fitness test along with the current L3 cohort?
5. If you don't get promoted assume you would still need to do the L4 fitness test as normal before the start of the season.

Sorry for all the questions and hope all makes sense.

Cheers
Brent

Definitely no requirement on AR appointments. I don't believe there is a minimum on middles either, but there is a minimum number of observations, which I think is probably 3. I know of people who've got promoted through assessment day mid-season having only been a 4 from the start of that season, with 3 observations.
2. Assume that if invited to an assessment day that attendance is mandatory otherwise will not be considered for promotion
Correct. Even if it coincides with something important, it's just one of those things unfortunately.
3. The fitness test on the Assessment day - if you fail this do you automatically miss the chance for promotion?
Correct. It's the first part of the assessment day and if you fail it, you go home there and then.
4. If you pass the fitness test on Assessment day and subsequently get promoted to L3 do you have to do another fitness test along with the current L3 cohort?
If it's mid-season, no - as you would have just passed that fitness test on assessment day. If it's end of season, you would then be required to take the relevant fitness test ready for the start of the new season.
5. If you don't get promoted assume you would still need to do the L4 fitness test as normal before the start of the season.
Correct, yes.

Believe it is min of 10 games and 4 observations. It is in the promotion criteria that's issued at start of season.
2. Assume that if invited to an assessment day that attendance is mandatory otherwise will not be considered for promotion
Correct. I know of refs who've been invited and zero wiggle room.
3. The fitness test on the Assessment day - if you fail this do you automatically miss the chance for promotion?
Fail the test and you are out
4. If you pass the fitness test on Assessment day and subsequently get promoted to L3 do you have to do another fitness test along with the current L3 cohort?
Those auto promoted aren't tested until the closed season. I expect this to change at some point in the future but to answer your question, no further testing until the usual annual tests.

@JamesL Assessment days are a way round the criteria. The 10 game sand 4 o s still applies for automatic promotions afaik which are few and far between now

It's 15 for auto.
To qualify for assessment it's 10. Might be less obs but you still have to have done enough games to be invited.

The 15 for auto is 3-2.

Here is the guidance for 4-3:

"To be considered for automatic promotion or invitation to the assessment process referees should have
completed a minimum of 10 matches in the Step 5/6 competitions of which a minimum of 4 matches will have
been observed.
If a specific Step 5/6 League/Pool has completed their season with the overall group average number of games
and/or observations per referee for that League/Pool significantly below this figure, the promotion panel will
determine a suitable-minimum-criteria.
This process will be applied for both the mid-season and end of season promotion processes."

Appreciate you taking the time for such a detailed response

Always been the case that if you are in line for possible promotion to L3 you would be best advised not to book any holidays. Was a seminar rather than assessment day back in my time, but there was still zero tolerance to not turning up, know of several referees who had to cancel / rearrange holidays.

I understand it always varies depending on location etc, but where would you realistically have to finish in your merit table to be in with a shout? Top 10 usually enough or are you looking closer to the top 3/4 like mid season?

Also depends how big your pool is. Normally I think you'd need to be looking at top 5 tbh.
