I looked on the FA and found that earring are not permitted in games, but I also saw a rule on the Boston Youth Rec League saying that earrings are allowed as long as the player covers them in tape. Local rules for youth competitions make the rules in their games, so in some small leagues you can.
Uhh, no sanctioned league can make a rule like that. USSF strongly supports the no jewelry mandate.

The Ref Stop
For what purpose?
Possibly (though not necessarily) for the purpose outlined in the FA/PGMOL statement they made when they allowed it for Ricardo Fuller in 2008.

"Jewellery clarification
Tuesday, 04 November 2008.

Due to many queries we have recently received from referees and the public concerning Ricardo Fuller of Stoke City FC, we are issuing the following statement concerning the wearing of jewellery in this individual case.

Ricardo Fuller of Stoke City does NOT play with earrings in.

He takes them out in front of the referee and covers the two holes with 'plastic caps' covered with tape to stop dirt getting into the holes and causing a possible infection. The referee checks this before every match."
