The Ref Stop

It was nice while it lasted...

Got to say, I was quite surprised to learn they were allowing spectators/patrons, both at Sporting events and indoor Theatres!
Whilst I expect the Commons will approve the new Tiered System, there's quite a lot of opposition, especially as we never see the specific 'scientific data' they claim to follow

Interestingly, whilst there's lots of opposition to certain Lockdown measures imposed, the Public seem to be opposed to relaxing the measures over Christmas. Bang goes the idea of having one Christmas without In-Laws FFS!?

northern league has suspended the league for a further 2 weeks up until the 16th Dec following discussions with the clubs this morning.

reckon more will follow in due course :(

just not something i've seen up here unfortunately

there's so many refs, all of whom are available with less games! hopefully it'll get back to normal next season!
Having same problem here. The restructure Was supposed to give us more middles and less lines. In reality
We now get less lines, but more free Saturdays as we now have more refs than games.

Western league have done the same and expect Southerneage too as well.. Think its the cross tier border issues that are the problem

Feels like it's going to be problematic for many clubs.

My supply leagues cover areas that are mainly Tier 2, but also has the IOW which is Tier 1. The biggest issue for the majority of the clubs would be the clubhouse closures as that drives a whole pile of revenues for them and for many without that it's not viable to host games.

The Contrib league I'm on covers teams from Tier 1 (Cornwall) through to Tier 3 (South Gloucestershire) with most in Tier 2.

Same issues on clubhouses apply, but also how they handle the clubs in Tier 3 that would require travelling in and out of their area. Do they postpone all of their games whilst in Tier 3 and see if they can catch up later if things come back?

With the real prospect of a tougher set of restrictions in many areas post January, I'm not optimistic about the chances of getting the season fully underway again anytime soon. Couple that with the usual Jan/Feb weather postponements and there is a real prospect of no regular games until March.

it's just going to end up getting canned again at this rate...

apparently FA are having an emergancy meeting this afternoon with govt to discuss it, but govt aren't moving on this issue (fans in semi pro football)

Yep. FA aren't ruling out finishingeague on a PPG system.
They won't void this year. They want to implement new structure. The clubs that struggle all year and then bring in a load of ringers to save the day will be done for.

This is what we have had today from the League and from CFA:
Dear All

Please find below a brief report from last night’s FA Zoom meeting with Step 5/6 leagues from around the country, believe me when I say we are actually in a better position that our colleagues with large numbers of clubs in Tier 3!

Below that is the formal decision of the SWP Board which has been approved overnight and is particularly aimed at Tier 2 clubs, for now that is 18 of the East sides, but at a future review (next Govt says is on 16/12) that could be more or less clubs and affect either division.

Meeting main points:

  1. FA not ruling out counting the season on a mathematical formula, PPG, but this is still to be confirmed, as would any conditions either PER league or across ALL NLS leagues and the percentage of games needed to be played etc
  2. Players & Bona fide officials (inc Match Officials) can travel in, and out, of all three tiers, but SPECTATORS cannot travel into, or out of Tier 3
  3. FA are exploring possibility of allowing more, maybe upto 500, fans in Tiers 1 & 2 – but this is subject to DCMS and NO date for this, PLEASE assume it’s still 300 until informed otherwise, especially when planning Festive local derbies.
  4. The same applies regarding the possibility of having 5, rather than 3, substitutes. The FA are looking at it, but as it would require national changes to Standardised rules no timescale, clubs are again advised to assume it remains 3 subs unless informed otherwise.
  5. NO spectators are allowed at grounds in Tier 3 – Huge issue for many clubs, does not directly concern us today, but if we move Up rather than down tiers.
  6. The DCMS 14 Million pounds has not been allocated to budgets and its expected that the vast majority, upto 80%, is going to be in loans, the FA are also not expecting full details and allowing applications until the New Year
  7. Take-Away – maybe for food and hot drinks, but certainly for alcohol take-away means take OFF the premises, so you can’t see cans in the tea hut to be consumed in the ground. Further guidance from the FA recd this morning below:
  8. The FA position is to refer to this guidance and if specific clarity is required a club should do so through their local authority : https://www.gov.uk/guidance/working-safely-during-coronavirus-covid-19/restaurants-offering-takeaway-or-delivery
  9. The FA made it clear that each league has to make its own decisions about whether to play on, postpone, delay or any conditions thereof, the SWP board remain committed to consulting with clubs wherever possible.

GOING FORWARD - The problem is that clubs in Tier 2 CAN play, CAN travel etc - BUT if they rely on clubhouse income then there are issues about if that’s sustainable – and remember although we are talking Devon now, in 2 weeks it could be Cornwall, so it has to be a rule that suits all.

  1. This applies for the period covering games on Saturday 5th & 12th December initially
  2. If a HOST club in Tier 2 feels they are unable to afford to stage matches they can apply to Postpone their home game by given written notice to the league secretary NO later than 48 hours before the fixture (eg Thurs 3rd & 10th December)
  3. On Weds 16th December the Govt will review the Tiers, if Devon goes into Tier 1 then this scheme stops, but if it continues in Tier 2 it will be extended. For Clubs in Cornwall, if on 16th December they are placed in Tier 2 then they would join the scheme and have until Thursday 17th Dec to postpone games on the 19th. Christmas games in any division would have to be postponed by Weds 23rd December, by 3pm at the latest.
  4. The league board, as per previous decision, will undertake a full review in January allowing for the board to ballot or consult with clubs about how to conclude the season, termination, extensions and fixture schedules as appropriate.

SECRETARIES NOTE: The 48 hours regulation is the LATEST, quite happy to receive notification you do not wish to host games much earlier, in fairness to Referees and Opponents and potential spectators, the more notice the better!

Finally, this again shows that this situation is far from over, we are all doing our best and the board appreciate the tremendous difficulties clubs and their officers & volunteers are in, Rest assured all clubs efforts are appreciated and we are only sorry that we can’t bring you happier news!

Kindest Regards

this is the Northern League Statement:

The League Management Committee (LMC) has sent the following message to clubs:

The current lockdown ends at midnight on the 2nd December 2020 and will be replaced by a three tier system based on total number of Covid cases in an area; the number of cases in over 60s; rate at which cases are rising or falling; the proportion of test results coming back positive and pressure on the NHS.

Decisions made by the Government will unfortunately see 37 of the league’s 40 clubs placed in areas covered by Tier Three restrictions which would allow football to be played at Steps 5/6 but would require them to be played behind closed doors thereby removing significant income streams for all our clubs.

Although the FA has stressed that their key objective is to conclude the 2002/21 season and implement promotion and relegation, either through completion of the fixtures schedule or by a mathematical formula if the season is incomplete, it is the feeling of the LMC that at this stage it’s simply not financially viable to ask clubs to play without spectators being present.

Consequently, at an emergency LMC meeting held earlier this morning, it was decided that the league would be suspended for a further two weeks until 16th December 2020 when the Government will be undertaking the first of its fortnightly reviews of the tier areas.

We will also review the situation at this point.

In the meantime the league will be carrying out a consultation exercise with its member clubs over the next week as to how we can fulfil the FA’s objectives and still comply with the Government restrictions without putting our clubs’ existence at risk.

Any decision regarding league fixtures does not include the FA Vase or the County Cup competitions which do not fall under our jurisdiction.

Lowest Deaths in Europe according to WHO.
That is misleading and apologies but wrong.

Sorry but WHO stats here for the whole pandemic - Sweden's death rate is close to 10 times that of Finland and Estonia.
Sweden: 643 deaths per million
Lots of EU countries way way under that: Estonia 74, Finland 70

Or by the standard of deaths per 100k in the last 14 days
Sweden 3 (better than the UK's 9.2)
Closest neighbours Norway 0.5 and Finland 0.4.

I live next door to Sweden, really want it to go well for them, but their "strategy" is unravelling horribly right now.
There is also nothing I know of suggesting the UK is trying to follow Sweden on this.

not the figures I’ve seen also Estonian ones are out of date I know a couple of people there and there’s are more than Sweden by a bit so my point stands it’s not that weird for UK to allow fans only strange side is it’s not capacity based.

Apologies if I come across fierce but just like to help bring down scepticism and panic using info I have.
And apologies if this comes across rude, but "that's not the figures I've seen" doesn't really count for much when put next to the fully cited articles that me and Santa have posted. Sweden is not an approach any other country in the world should be following, trying to cite them as having done well is dangerous.

They've done so badly in fact that even they have now changed tack to implement systems closer to those seen across the rest of mainland Europe. Even Sweden no longer believes that the Swedish model works.

I have articles but you would all of seen them spreading the false narrative about there approach being wrong is dangerous it’s simply different it won’t work in the UK now as it’s to big of a U turn the same as WHO are on record as saying there approach is now there best option but clearly it’s a emotive topic so let’s leave it.

Absolute rubbish.
You cited WHO, I linked to the WHO stats, and now you daren't post the truth? What?

An emotive topic? What? Don't post drivel, just cite some facts from reliable sources to back up what you are saying, go on, please.

In other news, 4 hours ago Helsinki added to this week's govt restrictions and announced closure of all indoor activities and city venues, most outdoor activities, and recommends no private gatherings outside own household. Meetings are capped at 10. All my futsal is off for three weeks.

(Apologies, may contain good natured bantz)

That’s a headline from September 3 (in my opinion by media desperately clinging to the idea that restrictions might be avoidable - good election coverage by CNN though - I watched for 42/48 hours at one point!)

You quoted a headline from a video that’s two months old that doesn’t deliver on the headline.

You could easily have posted this from last week:
You are embarrassing yourself at this point.

Am I detecting (some) fans back in stadiums with few footballers back playing at grass-roots? Is that really what Oliver Dowden was promising?
