The Ref Stop

Iran v Portugal

I can't argue. It was a disastrous night for VAR. This was the VAR I expected to get the final but I can't see that happening after tonight.

Ruined any remains of a football match we had left tonight.

I stand by my instinct that it doesn’t work for Football.

If it’s here to stay then I’ve lost the game I love.

Fair enough
I think i've run out of VAR steam. Ironically, we probably both want what's best for the game, nothing wrong with having contrast views

I just don't see how the handling call matches up with anything from FIFAs Futuro clips. I know that some on here disagreed with the handling call with DEN:AUS or KOR:MEX, but they matched what FIFA has shown refs.

I don't see anything that supports the VAR getting involved for the PK at the end of IRN : POR. I honestly think the VAR fell into the emotional trap of trying to even it up.

I suppose the disaster was going to come sooner or later.

Alot going on in this thread so to summarise imo

1. Pen to Portugal - correct
2. Ronaldo elbow - incorrect (red for me)
3. Iran pen - incorrect

The mishaps have been badly compounded by the referees struggling to control the players. It was stupid of FIFA to tackle the public image of the game on two fronts simultaneously by messing with the caution threshold

It was the referee I felt sorry for more than anything. He looked half decent to me but was constantly put in impossible positions and told to look at things that other referees hadn't been told to look at. There have been much more obvious penalties missed in this World Cup, including two for England vs Tunisia, yet they refer for a handball where the ball has travelled about two yards and the defender isn't even looking at it.

He went from looking confident in the first half to totally, totally broken by the end of the second.

Definitely agree on 3, no way is that a penalty. And I also think Ronaldo should have walked.

1. Correct
2. Correct - I think red would've been harsh, he didn't swing it (that I can remember)
3. Laughable

All three debatable for me & not surprised the ref didn’t give all three in real time.

Had there been no VAR I don’t think many dummies would have been spat out in tomorrow’s papers.

Every cloud has a silver lining.

Used to bump into a lot of Portugal players and youths in Vilamoura, neighbours of mine had memberships to an exclusive sports / health club over there, the place was the nuts.

Met Ricardo Q when i was 13, played footy with him he was decent but a unheard of kid the same age as me.

Me and other brits played the Portuguese lads on the Astro got our arses kicked & they coudnt speak a word of English but football brought us together.

I’ve Always kept an eye on Ricardo Q ever since, he has always had the X factor but never quite fulfilled his potential.

I had £3 on him tonight to get man of the match & the old chestnut came in for me.

Nice one Ricky.

You can say it's a foul, that's fine.

But the referee saw it, didn't give it, which was consistent with how he was refereeing the game.
For VAR to call that is absurd.
Herein lies the trouble with VAR. I watched the replays of this. At speed and in slow motion, I thought it was a hip check (foul charge) and a PK. Ronaldo definitely looked for it but it was a foul imho. Now the question is WAS IT A CLEAR AND OBVIOUS ERROR. That I'm not sure about. Ronaldo made this harder to identified by his flop. Had he not done that I think it would have been much clearer. So with VAR we have many ITOP variables. Was it a foul ITOOTR, was it a missed foul ITOOTVAR, was it clear and obvious error ITOOTVAR and then back to ITOOTR. I think the error part brings a lot of variation and like with any game, it will vary by who is filling that role

The VAR tonight was Massimiliano Irrati, who is a second category FIFA referee. So not elite, like Felix Zayer was on the Spain game or Clement Turpin on the Uruguay game, not the level below that (fist category), but second category. The English referees in that category are Craig Pawson, Stuart Attwell, Bobby Madley and Paul Tierney, and tonight was the equivalent of one of them telling the likes of Felix Brych, Cuneyt Cakir, Gianluca Rocchi, etc, that they had got a decision wrong and needed to review.

How on earth can a category 2 FIFA referee be in such a position of power?

Just seen the handball incident. I don't get that one at all, no idea how that is deliberate.

I give up.

Rubbish VAR - totally inconsistent with the referee's foul line

No VAR for the pen encroachment!
Yes. Saw that on the highlights. 3 Iranians multiple steps into the PA at the time of the kick. One was REALLY bad. I think I counted 6 in the PA on the freeze frame. Should have been a rekick

Without doubt, VAR has caused the controversy tonight, instead of preventing it.

Ok... the PK for handball to Iran????? No way that is clear and obvious error. Even watching it in slow motion, it is hard to be certain there was contact. This one was bad and should not have been reviewed in my opinion. These reviews are the crux of the issue with VAR. Now how to fix it (because I dont think they will let it go away)....

Yep none are nailed on in real time & all debatable on replay.

No doubt Fifa will paper over the cracks & release some bull sh*t spiel about how productive it was.
