Hi everybody, great to be here.

Just wanted to share a little about me. I have browsed this forum as a lurker on and off for the last couple of years. I have enjoyed the content posted.

I played football as a goalkeeper to a half decent level (West Midlands Regional League) and have always decided that I would take up reffing when my playing days were over.

Now is that time at 38 years old.

Currently doing my course and hopefully will become Level 7 in October when the course and 5 games and subsequent exam are finished.

I look forward to chatting on here.

What is it with goal keepers becoming referees? :D

Oh yes, I remember it's because they are crackers :D

Welcome to the forum mate.

Cheers for the welcome guys, will be sure to ask questions @Ross

Yes @SM us Goalkeepers are mad indeed, I mean we had to put our heads where some attackers would be afraid to put their foot!

I'm an ex-keeper n'all but through injury! almost 6 years ago someone kindly snapped my leg whilst playing :(

There's a test after 5 games now? I only completed 6 OA games and that was it - has it changed or is it county specific?

I'm unsure whether it is specific FA's that do this, sorry about that.

Maybe somebody else will know.

That is certainly how Birmingham FA are doing it.

I think it's nationwide. For us in Somerset:

2 x Sundays - full days, largely practical
1 x evening - Law 12

Ref 5 games

Back for a Laws of the game Test & review of "your journey, so far ..."

Pass the test and you qualify as a Level 7 (8 if under 16)

Yes, exactly the same as Birmingham that. So looks like it's Nationwide then.

Andy nice to see another person from West Midlands take up the whistle if you don't mind me asking what team did you play for

I played for a few teams during my time. I spent the majority of the time at Warstones Wanderers, but I did have spells at other clubs.

Cradley Town - Then Midland Alliance.
Darlaston Town, Wyrley FC - 1st's and Ressies.
Wednesbury Town.

Sure I missed a couple which escape me at the moment.

If you are looking to see if you reffed a game I played in, then it was probably a Warstones Wanderers game or most recently(last season) I was at Wyrley FC until March :)

Then no I did not referee you last season

Ok.

What other leagues do you do mate?

As I said I'm new to this. Birmingham FA are getting me my 5 games (Due email Monday on what league I will be on) I assume I will be on Wolverhampton Sunday or Beacon league seeing as I'm based in Wolves (Which is fun being a Baggies fan)

I'm just looking for advice as to what other leagues you do so I can expand my horizons when these 5 games have been done.

There is also the Warley Sunday league you can do West Midlands regional on the line as well

I must admit, that one of my main reasons for going into this was to start off on the line in the West Midlands Regional and work my way up. However when I asked Richard at Brum FA he said they (WMR) have a lot of officials currently and that I would be best going onto the Birmingham AFA to start with.,

This left me a little disappointed, do you know if ref's and Assistant's get travel expenses in the AFA?

No they don't I think you can claim but you have to go a certain amount of distance Glyn Thomas is not short on assistant referees at all

That's good to hear, I know Glyn and he will know me as soon as he sees me. There was a time at Warstones when he had to run the line due to a shortage.

So maybe Richard is telling porkies. I will be sure to contact Glyn directly when my 5 games are done and I'm qualified. I can't do it at the moment because being level 9 they won't let me near a West Midlands Regional line yet, will they?

I have a friend who at the moment is just doing his mod 5 which is the convertion course from mini soccer to 11v11 referee and is classed as a level 9 until he passes

And they are allowing him to run the line currently on the West Midlands (Regional) ??

If so, then when I get back from holiday next week I shall be contacting Glyn to get onto his assistant ref's list.
