The Ref Stop

handball on the line - penalty not scored.

I reffed an adult game today.

Shot comes in and the red keeper parries it. Blue attacker smacks the ball from about 8 yards out sweet as" and its goalbound (middle of the goal).

Red defender uses both hands to stop the ball (like he's a goalkeeper). The red defender is on the line and he's alone.

I award a penalty and a red card. No complaints.

The red keeper makes a great save from the penalty.

Red team eventually wins 1-0 and win the division they are in (turns out by a point).

I wish as refs we could award a goal and a yellow card in this scenario. Morally the non-scoring of a goal feels wrong in this situation.

Definitely a painful one, not sure what minute this happened but the punishments are a GSO in a penalty and a red card that reduces the opposition to ten men. If the other team cannot take advantage of either of these things then that’s on them more than anything else imo

I do think 'penalty goals' will come into football eventually, as with the concept of a 'penalty try' in rugby.

Will definitely change how certain we are on OGSO, however if you're questioning whether something is OGSO VS SPA,I doubt you're going to have a penalty goal on a plate.

This happened after 70 minutes.

What's frustrating about the current system is that a shot on goal may be the last kick of the game, and even though you would extend time for the penalty it is definitely not fair on the attacking team to not have a goal awarded.
For denying a goal with a handball offence I would prefer a caution + penalty kick with no GK, so the principle of actually having to kick the ball into goal to score can still be upheld and the attacking team can properly celebrate with the goalscorer.

Yes frustrating. This has happened in a world cup game so the powers that be are well aware of it.

But..... Hindsight is a wonderfully thing. Knowing what you know now makes the penalty goal a good solution. Let's say you award the goal and keep the red team at 11. It's now 1-1 or 1-0 to blue. In the remaining time red scores one or two goal (offender scoring both goals) and win. You'd then be wishing you had given a pen and sent the offender off as it 'would have been' a bigger advantage to blue.

I don't think the system we have now is bad. Which approach is best depends on the time into the game, current score and other factors. I don't think a simple change of giving a penalty goal is going to fix everything.
