Please have a look at this penalty. It's the first thing on the clip.

Deceiving the referee?

The Ref Stop
Absolutely. Poor decision from the referee which I’m sure she’ll be disappointed with but the actions of the player should have him very embarrassed and I’m certain there will be a retrospective ban for successful deception of a match official.

Video is geoblocked for me. From the youtube video i saw it is not clear if there was contact an a litle trip or if there was nothing. Also found this geoblocked but hope it adds some value.

But in general I do blame referees as much as I do players for diving. A foul (an actual foul) is rarely given in The PA if the attacker stays on their foot.

Cheating - Culturally acceptable. Dreadful decision nonetheless. Part of our challenge is to sense and sanction cheating, but we're collectively weak

I was at a Level 3/4 development evening a few weeks back and Swabey was warning us quite clearly against sanctioning cheating (simulation) unless we're extremely sure because it amounts to us calling the players cheats. THEY'RE ALL CHEATS!. I used to cheat. We/they cheat because we/referees are culturally weak at dealing with it so that significantly contributes towards it being culturally acceptable
The significant delay between the very minor contact and the player throwing themselves to the ground is the hallmark of cheating and it should've been spotted. But we're coached to be weak (safe refereeing), so that's that

Needed a change of pace in the build-up. Ultimately she had a good view.

It's the type of dive that was so badly executed normally they wouldn't even bother appealing.

The view we had through the lens of the camera clearly shows an exaggerated and delayed reaction to any contact that may or may not have occurred. So for the majority of us we can see that it’s an awful decision contributed massively by the blatant cheating of the player involved. What the naked eye saw at the time only one person truly knows🤷🏻‍♂️

what is your view then? dive or penalty?

Felt like you were saying it was a penalty.
I never offer opinions in debates of that nature on this forum, as there seems little point in doing so.
On this rare occasion I did become involved, to encourage members to look at the position of the referee (and therefore her viewing angle) and an element of possible contact, rather than considering the attacker's exaggerated fall as "evidence" of simulation.
A learning opportunity for newer referees.

I understand the position of the referee and what she may have seen and it’s absolutely a clumsy challenge from the defender, but the fall absolutely is cast iron evidence of simulation in my opinion.

Just watched highlights of the Charlton game against QPR and the QPR player attempting to win a penalty late on.
Clear simulation.
No penalty.
But no card.

Id rather refs went back to cautioning these and get the very rare one wrong (as i believe they dont caution as they're not 100% sure or at least dont want to be the ones that mess up) than allow players think they can either get a penalty or no punishment for trying.

Out of interest what is the process for the FA charging a player with deceiving an official?

Does it start with a complaint for a club, a match-day observer or does the FA look at every EFL penalty awarded every week?

I just cannot see how this has escaped any further action.

The problem with that is you are accusing them of cheating, I’d want to be 100% it was simulation before I do that.
