The Ref Stop

Game abandoned

I was assistant ref on an u18 match. Game was called off due to the thuggish behaviour of the away team. I reffed them last week and they were horrible. I dished out 4 cards for dissent and in hindsight I was too soft in them.

Anyway, Sundays ref was a very experienced referee and they started with the dissent. Ref had a chat and told the offending player to stop, but he just carried on… out came the card
Game continues. More dissent from other players followed by foul and abusive language aimed at the ref…..out comes the red. I could go on and on, but I lost count of how many yellows and reds and even more reds after the game was abandoned during the first half.

Anyway. I found it all a useful learning experience.

I have a few questions though if I could pick some brains.

When a player refuses to give his name, what’s the procedure? Do we call the game off?

First player to come back from sin bin, pushed a player while running back to position for no reason at all other than to impose himself. Wasn’t a push that cause the player to fall to the ground, but it was aggression for no reason. Is it a straight red or another yellow card? And for what offence?

If a player refuses to give their name, you can ask the captain (who may or may not help) and/or the manager (likewise)
If it's a caution, the player needs to be aware that yellow may turn into red if they continue to refuse.
If it's a dismissal send them off and report the refusal.
Re the push on return from the sin bin, if it warrants a caution it's unsporting behaviour (and in England adopting an aggressive attitude)

Thanks for that.

The game was abandoned because the the team all came on the pitch including the “manager” and refused to play on.
It’s the 4th time this season a ref has abandoned the game with them and it’s an u18 team.
From my understanding, the team is run by the kids and they have a figure head manager who isn’t involved.

Regarding the push when coming back on. Is it worthy of a card? I just see no reason why any player would need to do that when coming on from a sin bin and it just screams aggression.

From the way you’ve desvribed it, I doubt it was violent, but if it was, has to be a dismissal.

Otherwise, I’m seeing it as totally unnecessary, and if it wasn’t provoked, I’m cautioning for Aggressive Attitude by the sounds of it.

That’s what I was thinking. It wasn’t violent, but it was aggressive.

I saw it, the ref didn’t and while I did bring it to his attention, there was a lot going on and other things had to take priority.

I just wanted clarity on what I could do if I was in the middle.

If you see it, and you feel as thought it meets the criteria for Unsporting Behaviour, under Aggresive Attitude if you’re in England, then I would be cautioning it. Ultimately, what offence is commited by pushing has some level of subjectivity to it.

As it’s coming off a SinBin, he would be able to stay on the pitch, provided he hasn’t picked up any other cautions.

Surely your local FA is going to hit them with a fine for causing the game to be abandoned/failure to control the players? 4 abandonments in a season is extraordinary.

I presume so. Not sure they care.

They'll understand when they can't play any more games until the fine is paid, though I suppose if it's a U18 team they're about to age up into senior football anyway.

Well I believe it’s the club that could be in trouble and not just that team so hopefully the club will take it seriously.

The number of red cards is a big fine on its own. Hopefully additional action is taken which will mean the club actually take this seriously.

With the number of disciplinary points they will rack up the league can also refuse to accept their registration for next season.

& even if they are accepted into the league, they can referee their own matches next season!

Dangerous approach, as they will probably be very happy without a referee, the opposition almost certain won't be as they kicked from pillar to post.

That's why I have never agreed with the approach of withdrawing referees for problematic teams, doing that just actually plays into their hands and disadvantages their opponents.

Question though. The game was 3-0 to the good guys before it was abandoned. Will the score stand or will it be classed as a draw?

Well, apparently they have been using their coach as a ref a lot of the time and that has made things worse.

I could not agree with this more. There is a horrific team to ref in one of my leagues. But they are top of everything. They love not having a ref. It is exactly what they want.
