Commentators all agreed it was a penalty but thats a bit soft no? I dont quite understand it because ive never seen that given, I dont know how I could explain that if I gave it on the field
I know the Liverpool penalty was disallowed by the VAR (after the referee reviewed it) but there seems little consistency with the rules or understanding of them. The same thing happened in a game between Liverpool and Brighton a couple of seasons ago and the penalty was given that time even though the ball had been cleared by the defender and his foot was kicked by the attacking player.
Despite the pretense of the modern game, not everything can be so carefully defined as to give exact answers on every event. There was good reason that for a long time the definition of offenses included “if in the opinion of the referee” . . . There are, and always will be, grey areas.
