This Friday sees delivery of the first of 6 pilot courses for the brand new FA WF course. The course will be delivered initially in Derby, Newton Abbott, Manchester, Essex, Southampton and Sunderland before being rolled out by County FAs to meet demand from September this year. The course will result in a recognised qualification from the FA for WF referees and in time will be a requirement for Referees officiating in FA affiliated Walking Football competitions.

The Ref Stop
You never know till you give it a try. One of the fastest growing sports in the UK and Europe and a lot faster than the title suggests.👍🏻

Been refereeing it fairly regularly myself for 3 seasons now and it's a good skill to learn. Your mind and peripheral vision have to be very sharp during open play which is why ideally, most WF games/tournaments operate with a referee on each side of the field.

I find the concept weird. Can anyone with experience elaborate on the nature of the game?
It’s a game of differing levels. Devised originally to provide exercise for the over 50s in or around 2012. Since then grown massively, played in all county areas with around 30 FA county leagues. Age categories are predominantly over 40 and over 50 for Women and then mixed at over 50,60,65 and 70. Competitive WF is played to a very high standard all around the country. There are some ex pros playing, a lot more who played a good standard of semi pro and of course all other levels as well. The FA National Cup has just started and will culminate with teams playing at FA St George’s Park in November for the finals. It is played with a non contact ethos and players must walk. These are the two areas the course will concentrate on as they are a major step change for players and referees compared to regular footy. Hope that helps a little.
