Excessive Celebration

It baffles me why anyone takes their shirt off during a celebration. What’s the point?

in my 5 years of refereeing I’ve only once carded for an excessive celebration, and that was only because the player made a point of running up to an opposition player and screaming in his face. Never had someone take their shirt off though
As I understand sometimes players get hot in the torso after scoring a banger

I don't think I've had a shirt off either. Once cautioned for facetiously rubbing the head of an opponent, but that was more bog standard USB than purely excessive celebration

I think imitating idols is a big reason, especially at youth level

Bear in mind this was the mid to late 1990s but this used to be my goal celebration, along with swinging it round my head whilst running back to my half. I didn’t get that many goals but when I did it was all consuming.

However at the time it wasn’t commonplace, not banned in law. My teammates all had their own celebrations, many copying Ravanelli’s shirt over head, Asprilla’s many dances and even Shearer’s 1 hand up.

Having your own celebration was a part of you and the game at the time. I was gutted when Giggs did it after *that* goal because it stole my thunder a bit, and I was accused of imitating him. I tried in vain to claim it the other way around
