Er, lunar interference stopping play?!

Hi all,

I've got a game kicking off at 1830 tonight (12th) in Yorkshire, and I've realised that the peak eclipse (95% of the sun covered by the moon) will be on about 35 minutes...

Any thoughts on how dark things will get? I'm going to try move kick-off 10-15m earlier to align h/t with peak eclipse, but any ideas most welcome! Also need to factor drinks breaks...

Going to watch a good friend of mine referee as well tonight with a 18:30 ko. I can't wait to see how he handles it as I don't think he has clocked it yet. An earlier start would definitely help, but there is only so much you can do when the sun disappears
 
I'm sure I remember the last time there was an eclipse, and I was expecting it to get really dark and it never happened. Apparently it'll just be like an overcast day in terms of light, so I can't see it having an impact at all... but I've been wrong before.
 
I'm pretty sure it will be too dark to play at it's peak, it isn't like when it is cloudy as some light gets through even the thickest of clouds, otherwise it would be as dark as it is at midnight. Sunlight can't get through a solid object, that's why birds get confused and think it is night time.

Will just need to suspend the game for the brief time it is too dark.

Eyes will adapt. If you stop then it may well be a long stoppage.

Let's see, I remember the last one and there's no way you'd be playing football during it. That was perhaps a slightly higher percentage but it wasn't a total eclipse for most of the UK. Easy to say that eyes will adapt if you are willing to accept the risk, but less easy when players can't see properly and it leads to a serious injury.
 
A 95% eclipse will be a heck of a lot brighter than the 30 minutes before sunset.
Fully expecting games to be halted for the eclipse then get completed in worse light conditions
 
Even brighter than I thought, wouldn't get a game played in winter if you called them off for light level

Some leagues called games off due to the eclipse 🤷
 
I'd say there a 3, maximum 5, minute period here where it was probably borderline, but certainly not as dark as I thought it would be
