The Ref Stop
They still need to play each other in the league for what could still be a title decider, the Spanish referees should refuse to officiate it. Force the league to call in an overseas referee who takes no nonsense, like Istvan Kovacs, Anthony Taylor, John Brooks, etc, and see how they like that. There's nothing wrong with the quality of the Spanish top level referees, rather Real continually try to intimidate them and are allowed to get away with it.

Obviously it's hard to tell, but from the highlights I've just seen, officials did just fine. If anything, I'd say all the big decisions went Madrids way (correctly)

Not seen the red cards, but doesn't look great on the reports.

Never ever liked Madrid, and this just tips me even more. That said, Madrid would probably like that to keep their supposed victim status going. I've never really fully understood the big thing for players wanting to go and play there. I get living in Spain can be a nice way of life and there's an element of prestige, but the club is just toxic. The fans were booing Mbappe the other day, and they're about to sack Ancelotti. Let's hope TAA knows what he's letting himself in for.

On the overturned penalty decision I thought the correct decision was reached at the end but for me the original decision wasn't clearly and obviously wrong for a review. Anyone else?

Had it not been overturned though, RM would have turned this into a "I told you so". On the flip side, I feel their tactics may have worked on this occasion.

The referee lost his head as much as the Madrid players to be fair if he hadn’t there would of been 2 more Madrid reds and Yamal for Barcelona but he couldn’t manage it very poor for football and refereeing all round

I look at the Boxing last night and watch my kids tuning into that 7-a-side crap on Sky during the week and all I see is sport being Americanised
The culture of elite football is trending towards utter nonsense and it all feels like we might as well get Mr McMahon in to drive some sports (like football) forward. The clarity between what's real and what's soap opera is eroding away

I think we're all accountable for the way the game of football is going. We're all more than willing to represent football and refereeing governing bodies and their dubious emphasis on protecting and advancing the commercial side of the game with little consideration for the more important values that sport should represent

Despite Newcastle winning a trophy, I've genuinely grown very disillusioned with top level football this season. The pantomime of VAR is a big contributor to the way I feel, but headlines like that of the OP reflect the deteriorating culture of the game and brainless mentality of broad swathes of society which I can't abide

On a personal note at Step 5 (and assisting at Steps 3/4), I've lost all belief in our observer's creed. Selling this, selling that, setting stuff up, annoying everyone with incessant and unnecessary box ticking and safe refereeing. It's all part of the bigger picture that demotivates me. Some advice has improved my game and there are some admirable observers out there, but I'm a much better ref when I show the courage to do my own thing and sacrifice any regard for what score I might get or risking re-classification by expressing my own stamp on affairs

I've been posting less frequently on here and that's reflective of my loss of interest. I may continue refereeing next season, but I've given genuine consideration to sacking it off as I've realized my own fallibility, the futility of refereeing according to an observer's (someone else's) agenda, and representing a game which is sliding in a nauseating direction

Not many truer words spoken @Big Cat

I'm missing city at Wembley today (at a family wedding) but I'm not sure I'm that arsed to miss it anyway. For many of the reasons you mention plus the cost in particular.

Ridiculous that semi-finals are played at Wembley. But it fits in with @Big Cat point that all they're fussed about is the commercial side.

That's the @Big Cat we know. 😃

It's not just the 'commercial side'. Money is only one factor. 'Power' is the other one that drives a lot the decisions. Why do we think RM is getting away with what they are doing.

Said it before but it bears repeating cos… balls to ‘em really.

When will the 100+ major trophy-winning, UCL record holders, UEFA top-ranked all-time club, the never-relegated, representatives in the new and expanded FIFA CWC Real Madrid * ever * get a break from the officials and competition administrators, even after their blessing as the royal family’s official club? Must be awful.

The poor lambs. My heart bleeds.

Hope their kitman finds another job and all their socks are slightly damp every time they put them on.

Absolute ballbag of a club. Like thrush in human form.

If you enjoy what ‘you’ do on the Fop and the players respect what you do, with or without an Observer then why stop. You can still do whatever you consider appropriate with and without an Observer, who as you say, there are some admirable observers out there.

Good advice from you as always. I don't wish to detract from the OP topic with my own game, it's just that I'm disheartened by professional football

I can understand that with regard to professional football & to a certain extent I feel the same, though I am then often re-energised from watching the EFL, whether it be the Championship, League 1 or even League 2 - where teams often get on with things & not roll about after getting a slight touch etc. The Referees I’ve seen are generally ok too - am impressed with David Webb.

We're very much on the same page. I don't understand why we're in such a small minority, but there's no question that I'll be watching Championship/EFL when Champions League is on midweek. I also agree that the refereeing is better in the 2nd tier in particular

Rudiger gets a six game suspension, during which he is going to get surgery for an injury anyway......

Absolutely pitiful suspension and reverberates a terrible message throughout global football about behaviour towards match officials.

Totally agree.

Suspension should have been for European games. He and his club have manipulated this.

Complete joke.
