Ecuador v Germany

Surely VAR should be staying out of subjective decisions? Subjective is the polar opposite to clear and obvious, VAR should be going nowhere near subjective decisions.

Although I don’t actually think this was a subjective decision.
Surprised at this post @RustyRef. 😄

Subjective vs factual is one of the important concepts in VAR. Subjective is not the opposite of C&O. It is the opposite of factual. Only Subjective decisions can be clearly and obvously wrong. Factual decision are black and white and not subject to ones opinion/interpretation.

This is from the VAR protocol, the section on when VAR should recommend a review.

Poor law wording again, I just do t see how something that is subjective can be a clear and obvious error. VAR was brought in to remove absolute howlers from the game, if something is subjective it doesn’t fall into that category in my opinion.

I think it’s a language difference.
Subjective as the opposite of factual, every decision bar offside / ball in and out of play etc will be, no matter how obvious it is

The degree of subjectivity is quite subjective
Factual v subjective is either factual and subjective, depending on perspective

Said it all along, foul play is quite subjective and we won't all agree
C&O however, is a whole different level of subjectivity that we'll never agree on. And it usually leaves us incredibly more incensed
