Dutch Referee Blog - KNVB fitheidsmeting – a Dutch fitness test for referees

This blog post explains the KNVB fitheidsmeting, a Dutch fitness test for referees. This new fitness test is introduced in the season 2024-2025, because they want to create a test that connects with refereeing at every amateur level. Why this new test? The tests is based on parts of the (ideas behind the) FIFA fitness test, YoYo test, Interval Shuttle run test or Intermittend Fitness test. Referees can score points the longer they take part in the test. Other crucial criteria: Easy to organise Related to what referees do in their games at amateur level Referees can easily train for it The test is accessible for referees at all physical (condition) levels There is still a possibility to see difference between fit and extra fit referees How the test works? The test is quite easy to organise and all you need is half a football pitch. All participants in the so-called KNVB-fitheidsmeting run 40 metres, have 10 seconds to turn, run 40 metres back and then have 10 seconds to turn and rest again. You don’t have to touch the 5m line in your resting period. After 10 seconds you hear an whistle to signal for your start. The start speed of the first 40 metre run is 8 km per hour. After going back and forth, the speed increas with 0,5 km/h. So after 80 metres your new speed will become 8,5 km/h, after 160 metres you start at 9 km/h. When you pass the test You complete a run when you arrive at the 40m line before the whistle. Firstly, the test is over when you are too late in 2 consecutive runs of 40 metres. Secondly, the test is over when you quit yourself. As soon as you’ve completed the first 2 runs you get 5 points. You get the maximum of 100 points if you pass the 2 runs of 22 km/h, which is after 2320 metres. Audio that helps you Audio files will help the referee practise the test. Whistle signals mark the start and finish of the 40m runs. Referees will also get a beep halfway the 40 metre run, plus there will also be a beep halfway the 10 seconds rest. So you get an indication how you’re doing. Download the audio file for this test
