"Double Header" Fixtures

Kes

I'll Decide ...
My Saturday League have just informed me that my next fixture (this Saturday) will be as described above. A fixture involving both the home and away "leg" between both teams, played on the same day and (oddly) at the same venue.
This is presumably to counteract the effect of the huge backlog of postponed and as yet, unplayed fixtures that now looms owing to the appalling weather we seem to have had since before Christmas.
My first match will commence at 1.45pm, lasting 30 mins each way. The second ("return fixture") match will commence after a 15 minute interval immediately afterwards, again, 30 mins each way, and the complete fee for the day will be £35 for both fixtures as opposed to the normal £25 fee for the one match.

First time I've ever encountered this or heard of it before. Not a problem for me, makes sense in the grand scheme of things I suppose, but I wondered if any other members' Leagues were doing the same thing or indeed if they'd encountered this scheme before? :)

Never heard of that. Could be an interesting day if you have reds in the first game, or have to deal with some sort of speccy misconduct.

What age is the game(s)?

A fairly common event, particularly as you get towards the end of the season, and not surprising at all that they are starting now after the season we have had so far.

Be aware that all cautions / dismissals etc are not carried from one match to the next. So if you caution a player in game 1, and then again in game 2, that is not their second caution so off they go. Likewise, if you dismiss a player in the first game, they are allowed to play in the second (which could be awkward - I've never had this situation thankfully).

Open age mate. I'm not really up for youth/kid's stuff.

So glad I posted this now since the card issue that you mention hadn't even occurred to me - Thank you. :)

I'm guessing the whole "fixture" will just be treated like a 2 hour match, in which case any cards issued during the first 60 mins, will carry over into the next 60 but I'll need to ask that question first. Once I know how it's to work, I'll have to brief both teams before the start.

This forum is great.

Okay. Seems I might have been wrong in my previous post then(?)
Thanks for the advice. It's a completely new thing for me so I'll speak to the League anyway. :)

Me neither mate. Don't have the patience for youth.

Imagine doing that on a Sunday? Most of my Sunday morning lot can't manage 60 minutes, never mind 120.

This scenario was recently brought up at a recent meeting I attended. We were told to be open towards the strong possibility of this scenario happing in March & April.

The cards issue was raised, and it was agreed that the two games are completely seperate. So a red carded player in game 1 would be eligable to play in game two, as he has 14 days grace in any case (ie he would be able to play in a game the following week after being sent off in a normal scenario).

What was agreed was that the same referee would not be refereeing both games. Two referees would do 1 x 60 min game each.

Interesting.

I suppose doing it the way my Saturday League are means that it costs less in match official's fees then. ;)

Happens in the youth league I ref in quite a lot. Match length decreases by 33% and ref is paid 1.5x normal fee, split between both clubs.

Kes, we have a game this weekend against a local side. Because of the backlog that we are facing, we've agreed to play both games on the same day. Because of league rules, we can't play two normal games as the maximum permitted time in one day is 2 hours. 2 games comprising of two thirty minute halves.

We're gonna be busy! I'm already looking at reffing Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Saturday etc for the whole of April. There's a great deal of catching up to do.

Wow. Good luck with that mate. Watch out for those Achilles and hamstrings. :)

Not common just a bit early in the season to start, more normally a April issue.

Potentially changes to team between matches, so you should get 2 team sheets.

You have to treat as two distinct matches rather than a continuation.

Remember to take plenty of drink and an energy bar. You will struggle otherwise.

Darius, last season I played in a double header... Beat them 18-1 in the first game, 24-0 in the second game.... After thirty mins, the opposition gave up. We carried on scoring but it was a rubbish game that no one enjoyed :/

This has the potential to be horrific if anything were to happen in first game.

Fair point.
That's my only concern realistically.
Irrespective of the fact that they might both be treated as separate matches for discipline and record purposes, the fact that they're 15 mins apart means that they're effectively the same match.

It might be feisty, it might be tasty, but I'm quite looking forward to it now. :)

What's the worst that can happen (famous last words)?

They can't make me pregnant can they? :D

Which is fine, and 9/10 matches that's fine.

However what about the match where you send a player off for VC? Or OFFINABUS? Or SFP even?

Said player comes back as does the opportunity for 'revenge' or for more abuse? The player could end up with a 7 game ban if he hasn't calmed down!

I would suggest this where you could be proactive and speak to the manager before the start of the second game....suggesting that maybe Mr Hothead starts as a sub.....obviously we can't insist on that but at least you will have tried to prevent a disaster.

If they don't go for it, then just clamp down on everything for the first 10-15 mins and take the heat out of the game. Paying special attention to Mr Hothead

Not sure that's really the correct thing to do.

Have to treat as two separate matches - if the matches were, say 6 weeks apart, would you be refereeing 2nd match any differently or paying special attention to "Mr Hothead" - you certainly wouldn't be be telling the manager which team to pick!

I've done a few of these, did have an issue once with a CAR in the first game. That team threw a mini strop before 2nd game , initially refusing to provide a club AR for 2nd match. Luckily someone sensible eventually stepped up to the plate and took the flag.

However tempting it is to carry forward knowledge to 2nd match, they do need to refereed as if they were on two separate days I believe.

If you've dismissed someone for VC late in the first match.....you have 15 mins before someone goes looking for revenge.
Players will bear grudges against opponents lasting seasons, never mind 15 mins!

Whilst they are separate matches, anyone with half a brain can see that there is a potential for a massive flashpoint in the second one.
By approaching the manager you are doing what you can to prevent that flashpoint. Nothing wrong in that....you'd use the captains during the match to calm players down, just an extension of that principle.

You're not telling him what team to pick, you're pointing out that he has an opportunity to prevent a bigger problem occurring....whether he chooses to accept it or not is another matter.

As for special attention.....you have a player you have just dismissed moments before....why wouldn't you keep a closer eye on them?
They are going to a target for potential revenge from the opponents, and they have already shown that they have poor discipline.....receipe for disaster.
