Count down, or count up

I’ve been thinking about the “8 second goalkeeper holding the ball” law change, and the mechanics of how to actually implement it in practice.

For the final 5 seconds we, the referee, will now display a five-second countdown gesture when a goalkeeper holds the ball. My initial thinking was that you would hold up a hand with your five fingers splayed out, and then, one by one, fold them in, counting down from five.

But when you physically try and do this, is it much harder, and much less natural than to hold up your hand with a closed fist and then, starting with the thumb, extend your fingers one by one to count up to five.

(If you’ve not already experimented, try it now.)

Do I have to count down, or can I do a “count up” from closed fist to five fingers?

Officially it is a count down...

I received advice from a good referee at the weekend to swap at the point of 3 to 2.

So from 5 you put down the thumb first for 4, then index finger for 3. Then swap when going from 3 to 2 to use the index finger and the middle finger held up, then use just the index finger for 1.

I want to see some Ted Rogers impressions on these countdowns (younger forum members, ask your parents)

You are right that starting with a clenched fist, then showing 1/2/3/4/5
fingers (4 fingers, one thumb) is easier. I know you're right😁, as I mentioned the same on here two months ago, and was told it has to be open hand then counting down to zero as that is mandatory.😕

"the eight seconds begin and will visually count down the last five seconds with a raised hand."

This to me doesn't strictly mean I can't switch hands for the count so long as the counting hand is raised. Anyone brave enough to switch hands for each count? Or even just once for @RefereeX's 3 to 2 switch.

Is the 8 second rule in force in the Women's Euros? Not seeing any either last night or tonight.

17 by my watch!

It is, although aside from the above one I can't say I can recall any instances where I've thought a keeper was obviously taking too long.
I saw one given by a ref in one of the first games. None since
