U13 low level match that I was doing as a favour.

Player instinctively used his hand to stop the ball going in. Instantly grabs his head.
I call him over about to issue the red card and I get a shout from the oppo manager saying, please don’t. It’s not what we want. Defenders manager says it’s a red card and he respects whatever decision is made.

I know this is wrong in law, but while it was a competitive match, the opposing manager was adamant that they know it’s a red card, but don’t want it at this level.

What should I have done? Red or yellow?

Regardless, I was impressed with sportsmanship from managers.

Ps. They scored the penalty to equalise.

Its the issue though, the rules are the rules. There is too much of this in the game when it comes to children. The lad has to learn from it, if he thinks he will get away with it, you know what will happen next time.

I agree, but you had to be there. It really wasn’t malicious.
As you say though rules are rules.

I only had one similar situation. It was an adult dead rubber game in a very one sided game late in the season. It was an instinctive save on the line by a field player. Howerver the way I saw it, it had already crossed the line, at least that's what I told everyone, gave the goal and a yellow card. Everyone was happy.

Another option is to ask the coach to take the player off (at least temporarily) without showing the red card.

What I would do depends on if it is a competitive gave with results having an impact. Keep in mind the result can have an impact on teams that are not there.

I once had a young lad who instinctively used his hand to deflect a ball away from the goal giving rise to DOGSO. It was the hardest red I have ever given as I knew it was absolutely an automatic response rather than a deliberate action. He was a fellow youth referee and so he knew what was coming. I apologised when I showed him the card but we both knew I had no option in the circumstances. Missed two weeks playing (and refereeing) which seemed a bit harsh at the time. I personally prefer the discretion sometimes exercised by One and others but I am not sure my assessment would have gone so well if I had downgraded this one….

2 weeks?

Should be 1 game / 7 days.

Misread. I read it as grabbed his head to claim it hit him in the head as many players do.

No need to speculate on intent as he has deliberately handled the ball.

Exactly.

I dropped a glass and it smashed yesterday. I did a similar FFS hand to the head.

I knew I had a smashed a glass but I did not intend to do it.
Clumsy so & so! 🙄

I hope Mrs L gave you a straight red for that one! :D

A very good point well made.

Had a men's adult game at the weekend where I cautioned a player for entering the fop without permission. Mix up on a substitution/injury incident/procedure.

Had the player started to move onto the pitch and hardly come on, I'd have used spirit of the game and left it at that, but he ran on and started to get involved in active play.

Felt sorry for the player and team but let's be honest, everyone knows a sub is at a stoppage, and this team had been around a while, so should've known better.

Also, if I hadn't cautioned him and he'd committed a yellow card offence later in the game, I have an issue on my hands...
