Physically, it depends on the referees level of fitness. Mentally, yeah, it can be tough, but when there is a shortage of officials, what's the alternative? I often tell coaches and players that the abuse is forcing those left to pick up more games.This is good for your bank account but is reffing for 4 hours leaving you able to give all 3 teams the best performance? I would doubt it.
I did 2 games today (second was a friendly) and my legs were shot by half time in the second game.
When I used to do back to back 3 games and that was my only form of exercise, yeah, it needed some planning in the earlier games to ensure I could get through the three games and give enough.
Now though, I run about 35 miles midweek in addition to the 3 games (rest day Fri & Sun) and obviously the increased fitness helps tremendously with both physical and mental state.
It's all a matter of what you're used to, but I've no doubt I'm just as average in my third game as I am in the first.
