For me, yes. Neither clear and obvious in my book.

First I see the argument but the player is still wide and the angle is getting ever tighter.

Second they should never get involved, ankle breaker.

Human nature, people always want what they think is better but when they get it they realise they were better off before. And in that sentence I think I have probably just explained VAR in itself.

Ah.... sarcasm. It can never be a good debate without it. (See what i did there? And I am not finshed)

A better assumption would be when one says fans want Europeant referees, they mean a European referee to referee the game not one to do the VAR job. And certainly not a European referee to serve beer at the bar.

If people really want European refs, they also want European VAR. I'm not sure that's too outrageous to assume & VAR make up the refereeing team too, the referee can stick to his guns if he wanted to (he didn't). The referee got both these right on field in my mind, but European refereeing (including/especially VAR) is far more chaotic and inconsistent than we see in England.

But isn't it VAR that fans have an issue with?
As in, they think theyre missing loads of stuff within VAR and not helping the ref.

Hard to tell with the first one, it does look like it might just be outside of the area where the contact is made, no real issue with me if the VAR did give definate proof it was outside the area.

The second one is just baffling, how can a FIFA ref go to the screen and thinks yeah I got that wrong, yes he got the ball cleanly but the follow through surely endangers the opponent.

As for wanting the best foreign refs, I be against it but the refs will have to adjust how the PGMO want to officiate the game, if they don't they won't last very long here. Yes no doubt VAR is more fussy in Spain but if that how they want to operate it then that's fair enough.

People don't realise how good our refs in general are especially our assistants who 99% of the time get offsides spot on and very rarely make a clear error on a offside. We all know the weakness is spotting SFP and with that second incident, it would not surprise me if most of our refs went yellow there basing on experience.

The only way it should ever be considered is if it is an exchange programme, that being said why would the PGMO stop the progress of their own referees for those that haven't an understanding of the English game? It's always been a nonsense argument in my eyes.

First one was actually a second yellow, given for a free kick. (according to the Spanish instagram ref)

Very clear DOGSO in my book, the goalkeeper was stuck in concrete. Understandable miss in real time.

Think we discussed recently that the VAR intervention doesn't actually add anything when it's a red on field anyway.

Probably not a surprise, the Spanish Referees Technical Committee conclude VAR was wrong to intervene on the Red card.
