The Ref Stop

Aston Villa - Middlesbrough

The link above is geo-blocked. But this one works:

From the angles available the ball is kicked pretty much to the centre of goal and it should have been a red. It would have easily gone over the defender's head too.

MD was a bit far but had a decent angle. Goes for the back pocket, looks at AR, then a a facial expression of "probably not" and takes the yellow out. I think, in real time, possibly the distance to goal created too much doubt for him to give a red.

I have seen red give in more doubtful situations. The one at 50 seconds in this clip is almost identical.

Like Rusty says, we can be sure it was goal bound from the angle the tv cameras give us.

John Terry is also in a position where he might have got to it, but I think that would be a bit unlikely

It’s just another prime example of how unrewarding and taskless this job is.

87mins Dean had a decent game, it was frenetic fast paced with everything on the line, I feel he controlled it well used his cards well when needed to diffuse situations, he generally had a decent game.

Low and behold everyone will remember his performance for a decision with 3 mins to go, not for the previous 87mins.

Your only as good as your last decision in refereeing & by good it’s almost impossible to be right everytime. Sorry let me rephrase that it is impossible to be right everytime.

They missed the FK so they can’t say it wasn’t punished kick wise, Would 10 men have made a difference, we’ll never know!

Possibly not but as you say, we'll never know. However, a red card and a suspension would have a massive impact on the playoff final. Maybe, spare a thought for Fulham.

Red for me, for what I see in the clip, and also because if the gk handles a shot which is on target, central, i think football expects to see a red card

Have to say Smoggy fans bitching about a late poor refereeing decision on Twitter to deny the spoils is a bit rich on me after our last minute perfectly good goal disallowed at the Riverside for ‘offside’. #robbed
100% a red card but it had no outcome on the game. Both sides poor over 2 legs but Boro the worse of them both! Can't see Fulham worrying after watching that.

I'm a Boro fan, that was definitely offside (I was looking the other way at the time )

Just so as we're being clear here, this is not a potential denial of a goalscoring opportunity, it's the potential denial of a goal. If the keeper had handled the ball outside the area to stop it going to another opponent who would have had a tap-in or to stop a player in a one-on-one situation rounding him with the ball, those would be potential DOGSO situations. Stopping a possibly goal-bound shot by illegal handling is a potential denial of a goal, not a potential DOGSO. The two offences are related and come within the same paragraph in the Laws but they are different.

So what colour should the card have been then?

I am leaning towards red. I think the video from @one is clearing that up for me. I only even had doubt in the first place because of Mike Dean's decision - I would really like to know what his thought process was, but perhaps objectively this is simply a mistake?

100% red card. And doubtless the assessor said the same after.

But we learn from that. Just because it was only inches outside the box doesn't make it any less of an offence. Is there a chance that MD was unsure if it was in/out and that affected his judgement?

I dont think so, because there would be no offence at all if the gk was in the box?

If it was inside the penalty area surely there won't have been any offence commited?

Rambo Riley just had a mare. We all know what that feels like, but i do think the hasbeen is past his sell by date. He was one of the best imo

They are talking about "game management" at the top level - but MD has not. Game management in this situation is dismiss - everybody expected.

The moment he blew for the offence, dismissal had to follow.

Lincs, is there somewhere on the forum where all the abbrevs are defined?

Well the pitch was also too wide for the long throwers, not to mention towels...

I saw this live and thought red. Yellow surprised me and I wondered whether is was a call over the mic (as mentioned he glanced over toward AR) or just second-guessing himself. The distance between the two players was so small perhaps that swayed it from ‘obvious’ to ‘possible’ in his mind?
