The Ref Stop

Aston Villa - Middlesbrough

Mike Dean has just cautioned Villa's keeper Johnstone for handling a goal-bound shot just outside his area. Am I missing something? Easy RC for DOGSO.

The Ref Stop
I can only assume they think the shot was going wide. Would need to see if from an angle behind really, but from the angles Sky showed it certainly looked DOGSO to me.

It's called 'goal-scoring opportunity' though, not 'certain goal'. He 100% denied them the opportunity of the ball going in and he blocked it so close to the shot that it would be difficult to tell exactly where it was going. Dean should be pulling out a red and I swear I saw him reach for the back pocket at first, maybe he changed his mind based on the ball's trajectory.

Spot on JH he did go for back pocket I can only assume he got a shout on comms that John Terry was covering behind the keeper.

Another grey area for me, you’ll never know if it was going in or not so how can you possibly expect the ref to guess & then apply the appropriate colour card.

Well, the offence in question would actually be called:

  • denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball (except a goalkeeper within their penalty area)
I'd assume, as the shot got away, the referee has decided that the opportunity had not been prevented. And has also decided that a goal had not been denied in this instance either.

For me categorically 100% the keepers got to walk.

He’s denied a goal bound effort deliberately, not sure what else there is to discuss.

To be very kind to the former top referee, Riley must have thought the shot was going wide. A lot has been said about the word 'obvious' on here in recent days. A goal bound shot is as obvious as it gets

Fair play I forgot about that wording, doesn't change my point though which is, to deny just the opportunity of a goal is still a red, not just a clear goal.

I personally think Terry may have got there, doesn't change the fact it's still a red because it's still an *opportunity* denied.

On the road so not much decent Internet speed in Camarthan tonight! Anyone got a link to the incident??....

I agree, but as I’ve said a thousand times it’s all down to interpretation & the man with the whistle.

For me the red is coming straight out Terry behind the keeper or not, for mike dean it’s a yellow for the rest of the referees out there who knows probably healthy split of opinion.

I go with gut instinct the split second it happened I’m thinking red.

I stick by that.

Once again I won my bet that was the sixth yellow I needed, so once again thanks mr dean mr Johnstone pleasure to watch you guys tonight.

Easy money the last three or four days with these yellows, especially these playoff 2nd legs they’re so intense you can’t not have cards.

I do feel for dean, he’s getting absolutely pelted online for the decision, he just can’t help but drop himself in it every time.

The ironic thing is he probably thought I’ll show everyone I can think before I act I’ll be clever with this one, it’s had the complete opposite affect the only saving grace is that it came on the 87th min & not the first 10 mins of the game.

Again, I would reiterate that I'd want a view from behind the play. I once got a load of grief in a game for not sending off for a very similar offence but I was right behind the kicker and the ball was going wide had it not been handled. It can't be an OGSO if it wasn't going in.

That’s my whole point, we’ll never know so how can we possibly expect a ref with one look at it to guess wether it was going in or not.

It will always cause this debate unless there is a law change that makes it black & white for a referee.

Have to say Smoggy fans bitching about a late poor refereeing decision on Twitter to deny the spoils is a bit rich on me after our last minute perfectly good goal disallowed at the Riverside for ‘offside’. #robbed
