Intrigued why you would delay a match to get a reserve 4O, the injured referee was capable of fulfilling the 4O duties even sat on a chair?

Referee sourced from the crowd, refereed an Essex senior league match in the morning.

Because another of the officials could then get injured, happened at Millwall a few years ago where the L5 referee taken from the crowd after Rob Jones went down injured ended up running the line after one of the ARs went down.

Plus it looks like Craig Hicks tore his calf, he should be straight in the physio room getting it iced and treated, not standing holding a board.

Not having that. Can't be holding up thousands of fans because of a future injury that might happen (and the probability of happening is incredibly low)

I tend to disagree with you on this one (the 2nd part). It appeared to be a strain rather than a tear, but could have been a minor tear - abutting more he would not have been able to walk, let alone try and continue which he initially he attempted to do. In any event, he did have the injury iced/strapped & nothing more that could have been done, so holding up a board etc should not have done any further damage (I would have wanted to help the team in any way I could).

It doesn't really hold anything up though. The 4th official has to get changed out of his tracksuit, and they have to swap comms kits over (and we regularly see how long this can take when they malfunction and have to be swapped). Can easily have someone from the crowd in the time that is being done, especially at a small ground like AFC Wimbledon.

I have experience of this as I was 4th official on a live televised FA Cup game when the referee went down injured, ironically with a calf tear.

Nope, they don’t need to necessarily swap comms. The comms the 4O has on is good to go. Only difference is they will likely have the button attached to close their comms, but this can be rectified at half time if really needed.

If their comms goes down, they just need to get on with it. Was speaking with a pal on FL the other day and he mentioned his comms went down in 1st half of a L1 game. They’ve been told to just get on with it as they don’t want the attention drawn to them at that level.

I'm not talking about warm up/changing time. Its additional stopped time to wait for something that's not needed

Will be different for televised games, they will switch the comms and wouldn't carry on if comms went down, at least not without trying to fix it. Can't remember the game, but it happened in an early round FA Cup game in the past couple of seasons and there was a lengthy delay whilst they faffed around with comms.

They would 100% carry on. It happens more often than you would think.

I didn't talk about warning up, I know from experience there's no way the TV floor manager will give you time to do that. Although I was tipped off after the game by a senior referee that I should have gone to the changing room to get changed where I could have done a few stretches. But they were still finalising the switch over when the referee from the crowd went into the tunnel so it didn't add any delay at all.
