    Biography of Björn Kuipers

Well, I haven't read the book yet, but I do know he's a successful entrepreneur, owning and operating a number of supermarkets in the east of the country. Apart from that, he recently started a speaking tour of theatres, explaining to his audience the torturous beauty of our profession/hobby...

    Biography of Björn Kuipers

Hi, Earlier this week saw the publication of a biography of Dutch elite referee Björn Kuipers. My compatriot Jan, of DutchReferee.com fame, was even present at the launch. The thing is, I'd like to sound you all out to see whether there is any interest among you for an English translation of...

LoTG ---Where Can I buy a copy

I received a tweet from the IFAB in July in which they said that they - and I quote - "are currently establishing an order system for the LoG books. More info soon." This was on 18 July. Alas, nothing to be found on their website yet. I hope "soon" will be as soon as I, and many more, hope.

    Cleaning boots time!

Good lord, no! My father used to be the "facilities manager" (as I think they're called these days) at a club and he'd always cuss and complain at players who did just that, because it meant that every so often he had to unplug the drains. Please respect that sign, sir.

    Cleaning boots time!

@RegalRef: Earlier this year such concerns were raised, as a substance (MBT) in the rubber filling was linked - no evidence of actual causation! - to instances of cancer. But things went no further than a few - underexposed - articles and manufacturers of 3G pitches were quick to assure people...

    Cleaning boots time!

We have so many 3G pitches here in the Netherlands there's hardly ever any need to clean my boots any more, apart from shaking out the tiny rubber or cork pellets. Which, by the way, have a tendency to stick to my socks and then create havoc in the washing machine... Anyway, the few times a...

    Howard Webb - the autobiography

Well, just because, that's why ;) Oh, and there's the fact that I collect referee memoirs and similar books. Minor consideration, granted, but still... :D

    Howard Webb - the autobiography

He had a two-hour interview a few months ago on the Referees World podcast, which did make me curious to learn more about him than is already out there. I hope he will be able to disclose those 'interesting' bits, yes, but also that he will incorporate inspiring, useful, valuable tips and tricks...

    Howard Webb - the autobiography

Hi, Just noticed on Amazon.co.uk that Howard Webb's autobiography "The Man in the Middle" (not a particularly original title, seeing as David Elleray and before him Merv Griffiths (for the latter, see my review here) also used it) will be published in October of this year. The blurb on Amazon...

    Lifting

I have. Not so much lifting as a keeper climbing/leaning on the shoulders of a team mate to gain extra height to catch the ball at a corner. This was at an academy U13 or U14 match a few years ago. They were most surprised when I blew my whistle. I, too, was surprised for encountering a...

    Anybody collect anything?

I don't have a copy, but it's on my list of books to buy. Would you like me to point you to a secondhand bookstore where you can buy one? I know it's hard to get, but there should be copies still out there.

    Anybody collect anything?

Well, as my nick may suggest, I collect books on refereeing, whether they be (auto)biographies of referees, books on the - history of the - LOTG, old magazines or copies of the Referees' Charts. Like most hobbies, it's gotten totally out of hand but at least I'm trying to do something useful...

    In or Out?

I never made that assumption. I simply pointed out that your statement as to the number of Muslims in your country was incorrect if you had done the math. And yes, I took my calculation one step too far, but it does not detract from the incorrectness of your statement. As for ****stan, you made...

    In or Out?

I correct myself, the calculation would add up to 64 million, still a ludicrous number.

    In or Out?

There were about 500,000 Muslims in the UK in 1980 (source: Wikipedia). If that population had doubled every 5 years since, there would now have been 128 million Muslims in the UK. Please do your math. Also, when it declared independence, ****stan was already a predominantly Muslim-based...

RefereeingBooks - 40 Years in Football

Hi all, Finally had time to post another entry, this one on the 1954 memoirs of former top amateur football player and subsequent sports writer/journalist Ivan Sharpe. Not the most modern of reads, but Sharpe had some very good ideas about football, some of which didn't get picked up on until...

    RIP Robert Evans

Heard the other day that Robert (Bob) Evans, co-author with Edward Bellion of "The Art of Refereeing" and "For the Good of the Game", two of the better books about officiating, passed away earlier this week: Bob Evans. Thoroughly recommend these books. Sad that after Stanley Lover another...

The Football Association 1863-1883. A Source Book

A review of a totally different book this time. It deals with the earliest history of the FA and the LotG. Not much in it for active referees, but a must-read for historians of the game. Click here to read the review.
