    One of those games

It’s nice when you get one of those games! My Sunday league game this morning was 90 minutes of trying to stop players fighting. Was mentally draining and made me wonder. Although I was observed and it was highlighted how tough it was so hopefully the mark reflects it. I’d have taken a game...

Changing my mind based on players reactions

I had this today! Gave the corner but then it was obvious I’d got it wrong from reactions so I changed my mind and said “I knew it came off red guys I just forgot which way the teams were playing! My bad I signalled the wrong thing” Everyone accepted it

    Farcical conditions

At grassroots my opinion is listen to the players and see what they want, you’re there to facilitate the game. If the players are happy then crack on. Last week I had two Sunday league teams playing in the same colour shirt with only socks being the difference! Was hard but the players were...

    Craziest Appeal You’ve Seen

Running the line in a step five game. Manager is going apoplectic at me regarding repeated foul throws by the same player but I’m genuinely so confused what he’s on about. Next time I’m near the benches I ask him what he’s on about and he demos it by having the players foot half on the line and...

    Interfering with a promising attack

You asked for an example of a foul that interferes but does not stop a promising attack that you could then come back and caution. I gave you an example. Trying to pick fault with semantics and wordings in the LOTG doesn’t make you a good referee, otherwise the Premier League referees would all...

    Interfering with a promising attack

Deliberate shirt pull? The very nature of a shirt pull means it is deliberate as there is no possibility or intention of winning the ball so it’s unsporting behaviour. The attacker could manage to still get a pass off or pull away from the defender but you would be within your rights to come...

    ‘I did it on purpose’

Not identical but last Sunday I had similar comments from a player who I had already sin binned for dissent. I awarded a penalty to his team and overheard him saying to the other team that I’d evened it up as it was never a peno - it definitely was and the only purpose of his comments was to...

    Mock Test?

I can’t seem to find any online nor in the resources section of the website but does anyone have any mock 5-4 laws of the game exams?

    Sliding without contact

In my view where there is no contact because the player with possession of the ball had to take evasive action then I tend to award a foul. Why should the player have to be clattered and risk injury in order to get a free kick?

    Ball hits me

And one more variable - if the ball hits you in the penalty area it’s drop ball to the goalkeeper regardless of who touched it last

    5-4 Promotion seminar

Do The FA pay mileage for these seminars does anyone know? I’m in a similar boat and the events are all some distance.

    Overprotecting the goalkeeper

One of the earliest bits of advice given to me when I started out refereeing (by a Premier League referee giving a talk at a County FA event) was it doesn’t matter if you’re right or wrong, it matters if the players THINK you’re right or wrong. And I think that’s what refereeing is all about -...

    Interesting U13 experience

If the games already won then consider risk vs reward. Playing the advantage and turning 6-0 to 7-0 or keeping a lid on things, killing the game and retaining match control is better and reduces the risk of players getting hurt.

    Watford v Newcastle

Joshua King scored in the 87th minute and during his celebration removed his shirt. VAR then disallowed the goal for offside. No caution was issued to Josh King. Thoughts? Also I believe this was the first Premier League match to be officiated by a non-British referee in Jarred Gillett from...

    Kit Supplier Suggestions

Hello Now that A&H aren't being supplied with the Nike kit does anyone know where I can go to get the current kit that also do embroidery? The few that have been listed on this site that I have found with the search function only offer the heat applied badge :(

    level 5-4 fitness

I completed my fitness test last night. It’s the first time I’d ever done it and I’d not been able to do a mock run on the track before. I’ve been running on roads and getting around 2.4km but doing it on the track and the adrenaline, as well as carb loading the day before, I managed to pass it...

Player abusive to club linesman. What actions can you take?

I disagree that you’re left with no option. If a player is acting in self defence then how would it meet the definition of ‘excessive force’ required for violent conduct? It would likely be a proportionate use of force?

    Difficult match

Well this is clearly where we differ then because I also would not accept verbal abuse. However we both clearly have different perceptions of verbal abuse because this, for me, comes nowhere near that threshold.

Players and management moaning at referee when he is following new offside law procedures.

I’ve read your post three times. I’m still not sure how to reply. I’ve not mentioned anything about the laws I’m merely giving one (of many possible) practical example of how a player in an offside position chasing the ball could be penalised. 🤔

    Difficult match

I think you have to be selectively deaf at times and this is probably one of those :)
