    Homophobic language

Not to derail the thread, but I had an u17 game the weekend when one player said to another player "shut up you ginger". The player did have ginger hair, and I had words with the person who said it. I had words and told the player who said it that it wasn't on and could be considered abusive...

    Homophobic language

Are you okay in an open age game for one player to call another player "gay"?

    Homophobic language

I'm totally with @JamesL It has to be zero tolerance from the get-go. No ifs or buts. Sure, the kid may cry and not really understand, but he will soon be educated by the coach or parent and hopefully never repeat it again. We apply the laws and ignorance should never be an excuse.

    Cautioning keeper after penalty save

This weekend, keeper saved penalty and acted "in a provocative way" towards penalty taker after making the save. Not OFFINABUS though. Keeper laughed loud and sarcastically at the penalty taker and it was certainly inflammatory. In this case it was not particularly over the top so I let it go...

    Homophobic language

That's homophobic not sexist. It's incredibly unlikely someone would make that comment on the field unless they were trying to offend. I sent someone off in an underage game yesterday for calling another player a pu**y. Just thinking about this and wondering why we as refs look for reasons not...

    Homophobic language

Has to be red because once we downplay or try to explain away this type of language and behavior it shows some sort of tolerance to it's use. I'll never ever tolerate use of sexist, homophobic or racist language in any of my games.

    Football Boots, Law 4

Every match I check I just feel like I'm wasting everyones time, but at least with the younger ages, I always ask them what I'm looking for to keep them engaged. They almost ever say "metal studs" except for one lad two weeks ago who said in all seriousness "weapons".

    Positive!

Well done - always great to get the positive feedback and it doesn't happen as often as it should. When I work with CAR, their role is simply to flag when the whole of the ball is over the touchline - that's it. However, if the CAR was trying to be honest and fair and did have an opinion, I...

    Garmin Watch

On Garmin Refsix logs the activity as "other", so does not mess with running stats. Its a good call though - if you do run, you probably won't want it messing with your running stats.

Manchester City Women vs Arsenal Women

Great thread - actually learned something I can put into practice should it ever happen. After reading the thread, what I would do if this happens to me in the future.... Not blow for the dropped ball immediately, but if after "a few seconds" a promising attack has started, and I felt my touch...

    Garmin Watch

I use a Fenix 6x with Refsix (non-paid version) and it takes care of everything. I recently changed the GPS to check every second rather than the Smart setting, but I can't say I noticed a difference. Feedback from other users suggests it just writes additional data in the log files but doesn't...

    Under 12 Red Card

I've no problem with red, even at u12 (although it depends on the circumstances). The gripe I have is referees who let these things go and then complain about the lack of respect in the game. Crack down when young, do it consistently, and be fair. At worst, you'll get a reputation of a referee...

    From high to low

Oops - sorry, I meant to say that I told the blue player and coach it would be a sending off offence to use any offensive words directed at another player, but the use of the c word by itself has no place in the game, and while I probably wouldn't send a player off from just saying the word...

    From high to low

On Saturday at U15 game, half time red player comes to me and says that blue player called him a "small c...". I told him I didn't hear it, but if I did, he would be sent off and I advised I'll keep an ear out second half. I call over blue player with his coach and told him there was an...

    ‘Only asking a question’

I almost never engage with the sidelines unless I need to issue a warning or card. If they have a question, they can ask at half time or full time. I'm not stopping a match to answer questions for anyone, but I am open to clarifying a decision as the game continues where possible. When I do go...

    Powers of recovery...

Can I respectfully ask why someone is not able to do a Step 5 middle the night before a Step 3 line? (I do youth football and 3 games back to back in Ireland). I assume the football is much quicker so more sprinting as opposed to fast runs. Distance wise, would it be much different? Genuinely...

    QPR v WBA

After viewing and before reading any comments, I thought at least a yellow but thought I might be wrong and red could be possible. Just not sure if I would have given the red. Just don't know. What I do know, rightly or wrongly, is that I would take into consideration the surroundings. Charging...

La Liga 2...when the ref tries to play advantage

The referee is blameless in this situation. He tries to let the game continue and he can see if the attacker gets an advantage in the next few seconds. If no advantage materialises, he can bring it back for the foul. Simple. In the video, just before the attacker kicks out, there is still...

    Top Level Postponements

Brendan Rodgers comments are interesting: “We’ve still got a number of players out. We’ve got nine players out through COVID and other medical issues. In terms of COVID, we’re still where we were.” So, 9 players out. How many are COVID and how many are other medical issues? However...

    Keeper you ready?

I only do it at DFKs when the keeper is typically by his post setting up his wall or otherwise out of position and the kick could be an attempt at goal. Its to avoid controversy with the gk complaining they were not ready and concedes a goal. Its really a rhetorical questions as the whistle...
