Dutch Referee Blog - Week 14 Laws of the Game Quiz 2022-2023

To be fair on Q4 there is a big difference between LOTG and reality. Good luck applying the letter of the law in your next National League 4th on that one ! That doesn't, of course, mean we shouldn't know the theory

Dutch Referee Blog - Week 12 Laws of the Game Quiz 2022-2023

Agree with this. For me it fits within 'an attempt to play the ball'. As JamesL says, not a good attempt, but an attempt nonetheless. I also think YC fits expectation - to go RC for this, I'm wanting clear reason to believe (and sell) no attempt - in the grey area am always going yellow.

    Senior AR Tips

    1. Pick your battles. There are very few games where everyone is going to behave nicely for 90 minutes. If you are getting involved in minor breaches of technical area etiquette early in the game when it's not causing any practical problem, for credibility you are going to have to be prepared...

Dutch Referee Blog - Week 12 Laws of the Game Quiz 2022-2023

I thought these were straightforward unless we want to unpick whether 'at the end of' means 'after completion' or 'during the last part of' ?

    Red Card Procedure

As with any 'official' process, common sense should also guide us. Slavishly following rules rarely leads to good places. For example, I'm not asking for a name if I know it already - particularly if the player knows I know it as that just winds them up. So : - not for a second yellow - not...

    Fouling own team?

Agree with this. Being seen as overly busy is to be avoided ! The big difference with inter-team arguments is they are usually quickly diffused by other team members, so no need to get involved in anything below a blatant RC offence. E.g. I can't imagine ever going AA for team mates having a...

    Blocking GK's Fly Kick

If it's causing an issue and it happens again, you can just go Persistent on the second offence - even if you haven't actually stopped play for an IDFK on the first one. Keeper would much rather have ball in hand and just get on with it, so I'm only giving the IDFK if the ball has been released...

    Blocking GK's Fly Kick

As a life-long member of the GK's union, I can attest to the dangling leg being dangerous - no hesitation in going reckless YC for that. The only occasion I can remember doing SPA was late in the game with opposition keeper up for a corner and teammate blatantly trying to delay other GK...

    Top VAR drama!

It's definitely not only football - this from the aftermath of the India v ****stan T20 World Cup game last Sunday : Former ****stan opener Salman Butt too has opined on the same in a video shared on his YouTube channel and slammed the ****stan players for not knowing the cricketing rules and...

    Top VAR drama!

I'm less bothered that players don't understand - that happens in other sports too. What irks me is when pundits and commentators have no idea - and on run of the mill stuff, not once in a blue moon 11th player going down injured during a penalty shoot-out type situations (and yeah I know...
  11. Q

    Wilson Lloris

Never a FK for me - and that comes from a referee who was a GK in former life. I do sometimes get frustrated when pundits say GKs are overprotected - try being the only player who has to have eyes only on the ball and is fully extended with ribs exposed. Mine are comically rearranged from...

    Handball - VAR

Exactly this. IFAB can rewrite the handball law from now until eternity and you will never have all decisions being black and white - but there are certain situations in which players know they have to be particularly careful where they have their arms - sliding with the sole intention of...
  13. Q

    who has which flag...

I've only done a handful of Step 1 games as 4th, but in all of those potential replacement was worked out on the most senior of the other officials still active as a referee. So not the specialist AR, irrespective of experience. As one AR said, 'I haven't done a middle for 5 years' ! I'm...
  14. Q

    who has which flag...

Understand the distinction between seniority in terms of who replaces in the event of referee injury vs who takes benchside aka 'who goes Senior' in common vernacular. On choice of flags, to repeat my earlier post, unless it's different in different parts of the country and other countries...
  15. Q

    who has which flag...

If they have, it's not being implemented below Step 1 round here. Certainly not at contrib and all the Step 2 lines I have done so far we've had a discussion as a team of 3 about which way round to do it, taking into account all the usual stuff
  16. Q

    who has which flag...

Any idea what his logic is for this ? I can only think it relates to printed programmes and allowing spectators to work out which AR is which, but that's tenuous On every game I've ever been part of, if there is difference in the flags, senior AR gets the more patterned or orange one. That...

Liverpool v City - Klopp sending off

Very frustrating - Savage opened up on 606 basically saying it was the referee's fault - as if no PL manager can be expected to have any shred of self control. Reasons and excuses are not the same thing. Guardiola's behaviour around the VAR review was appalling as well. Thoroughly depressing...

    Illegal Feinting

Unbelievable Jeff. I hope someone has pasted the FA logo on this, rather than the FA being the actual source ?
  19. Q

    CRY CHE Dogso

I think you could make a case for red or yellow. Personally, I'm happy with yellow and glad to see VAR not getting involved in a judgement call like this
  20. Q

To wall or not to wall... That is the question!!

Agree - FK in shooting distance maybe 1 in 10 is indirect, if that, so uncommon enough to be worth pointing out. Nothing lost by a bit of extra communication, which is equally useful to attackers and defenders. Better than trying to explain it afterwards One other thing from an early...
