    Women's FA Cup

All good yesterday in my 4th qualifying round game middle, with Long Eaton causing a shock and beating Leicester City 4-1. A quiet game too, with 2 good assistants which made my life even easier!

    Managing NARs effectively

I remember once upon a time being an NAR and sticking my flag up for a player who obviously wasn't interfering. I just tried to look at the ref and shake my head mouthing ignore me - Didn't work :(

Can your assistants not destroy our pitch please?

I've been asked to run right backs before by an "older" referee. Even as a linesman it took a few minutes to get used to it and the swapping of hands around.

    Must be a record?

I've had 25 games this season, and not had a red card yet! I've had a few 0-0's in my time, including a kids game, which I thought never happened!

    Players Favourite Sayings #2

You're not going to put those bookings through are you ref? Yes I am. You did the crime, pay the fine.

    Going from 7 to 6 - Jump to 5?

Just a quick update on this - I got my letter through yesterday for confirmation of my 7-6 promotion! Bit of a surprise, as I assumed it was a straight jump, but hey ho, I'm not complaining!

    High Foot in Penalty Area

    Cheers guys :)

    Do the laws apply

I do have a slightly different level of tolerance when reffing kids. If anything, my level for language goes up, so they are fully aware what they can and can't say to a referee. As I've mentioned before, I think it helps being clear with the team / manager before the game what will and will not...

    High Foot in Penalty Area

Reds are attacking, and the ball is crossed in. Blue defender, for some reason, attempts to clear with a bicycle kick, and makes contact with the ball. Foot doesn't make contact with the red head who went for the ball, but is close. I awarded an indirect free kick to the Reds in the penalty...

    Chronic Shin Bone Pain

I have a feeling I'm suffering from the same issue. 1st 10 minutes of a game my left lower leg is in agony, but settles down after that. I've brought the neo-prene sleeve for match days, and will try the other exercises. Any other tips?

    Move ref!

I get it occasionally standing on the edge of the box for a corner from the far side. Sometimes a cheeky bugger will try and use me as a shield before running into the box!

    Referee attack

Sorry to hear that. As I've mentioned elsewhere on here, I got assaulted after a game by a player, which involved getting the police involved. The player involved only got a 6 month ban, and despite the club telling me that they no longer wanted the player on there books, he was on the...

    County Cups

I'm hoping I'll be assessed this game too as I'm assuming it will be a step up from the normal leagues I ref in. A quick check of the refs who are doing the 1st round suggests there's only 1 other level 7 doing a middle this round too :)

    Messing up an advantage

Yup, I just put my hands up and apologised. It effected my performance too. In hindsight, I ended up giving a soft penalty to reds. I did admit to both captains after I'd had a poor game and they said not to worry.

    County Cups

Anyone been given a fixture for a County Cup this weekend? I've got a middle, which I'm chuffed about :)

    Messing up an advantage

Cup game on Saturday morning, yellows are beating reds 1-0. Red player is clearly fouled on the edge of the yellow box, and I blow up. However, to my horror, I see that the ball has landed inside the penalty area to a red attacker who easily slots the ball home. How do you sell it that you've...

    What should I have done

At under 12's, I probably would have got the manager involved with the player (and captain if you felt he was mature enough), and advised that offering to "fight" someone is not how to act on the football pitch. If the keeper then carried on I'd be cautioning him for AA.

    Assessment basics

Cheers Brian. I'm going through Derby rather than Notts tbf, but will have a word with the RDO.

    Junior/Youth Dishing out cards

I do a fair bit of U13/14 games, and I've found that getting both teams together just before they do the respect handshake, with the managers together to warn them that language is a no no, and will result in you getting booked seems to do the trick. I'll still go down the warning / card route...
