    Southampton v Brighton

I agree with you @PinnerPaul - Atwell will look back on this as a mistake. I think he only gave the advantage because he genuinely thought Southampton would score - he just shouldn’t have pulled it back when they missed. My advice at grassroots would be to take extreme care playing advantage in...

    Threshold for Dissent

Agree with the above. Apologies for the cliche but it's often not what they said, but the way they said it. That said, cheat or the other C word will earn them a red without question.

Back after 5 years + sin bins

Yep, it is non-standard. I preferred it as it was simpler and essentially made the punishment for dissent more severe. Looking forward to seeing how it works here though, I've only heard good things.

Back after 5 years + sin bins

I think these might come in handy!

Back after 5 years + sin bins

Hi all - I haven't posted on here for a long time but thought I'd make a return. I've moved back to the UK from Australia after five years away. I refereed while Down Under but things were a little different... and I'll be back on the pitch here when lockdown ends. Any changes I should be...

Goal scored with extra person on FoP

I'm a bit puzzled by the possible restarts with this, but that's possibly because I can't see them being explicitly explained in the LOTG anywhere? Law 3: 9. Goal scored with an extra person on the field of play If, after a goal is scored, the referee realises, before play restarts, an extra...

    Here we go again

Called an end to my season last night after starting it on July 11th last year. I move back to the UK on July 20th and my first appointment is on July 23rd. Break, what break?

    Pre Season

My season in New York ends on July 20 and my first pre-season game back in the UK is lined up for July 24... Just enough time to polish my boots!

When new laws come into effect

In the US, where our season spans the summer, the law change came into effect on June 1. But as people say, check the tournament rules.

Busy start to a long season

After a couple of cup and pre-season matches, my season kicks off in proper over here in the US tomorrow... and I've got games on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Hope I'm not biting off more than I can chew! I also just had it confirmed by my work that I'll be heading back to the UK in...

Red card-where to send the player?

Unless he's causing trouble, let him stay. If he's causing trouble and the club can't take him elsewhere, collect the match fee and head home. It's not ideal, but it's sensible. Edit: obviously report the fact the club couldn't take him elsewhere after he was sent off

Debate: Is too much emphasis placed on referee 'levels'?

In my opinion, yes, sometimes. There are plenty of great level 6s and 7s out there who could go far but can't make progress because of other commitments (eg, work, family). I've seen them overlooked by counties and leagues for good appointments because of this and it can be unfair.

Moving from youth to adult football

I made the jump after two years of youth football myself (a few years ago now!) and for me it all comes down to confidence. Depends how old you are really but I made the jump aged 16 and found being firm, but polite, was the best way to deal with the stronger challenges and dissent, plus the...

    County Cup Finals

Congrats to all. Slightly different, but I just got an email to ask me to act as 4th Official in a junior version of the community shield in my district (new season is just about to start here in the US). Very surprised as I've only been here since September and will be back in the UK again for...

    Hypothetical DOGSO situation

According to the magic book: "Referees should consider the following circumstances when deciding whether to send off a player for denying a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity: "• the distance between the offence and the goal "• the likelihood of keeping or gaining control of the ball"...

What Other Hobbies/Interests Do You Have Apart From Refereeing?

Currently living in New York so when I'm not working or reffing (and that is a significant portion of my time!) you'll either find me in a bar, hungover, eating far too much delicious food or at a Knicks game

    Complete Mind Blank

Correct decision. Why the keeper decides to handle the ball is irrelevant (as long as the ball is in his own penalty area)

Common sense or Letter of the law?

It has to be a red card. No ifs, no buts. Not least because it'll come back to bite you if you ref either of the two teams again, and the same situation occurs but at 0-0 in the 90th minute. Also, spare a thought for next week's ref who will be trying to apply the laws of the game properly.

IFAB Laws of the Game 2016 overhaul

These mostly sound good, but as you guys have said, the offside change would be wrong and would only cause more unneeded confusion. I'm unreasonably annoyed at changing the kick off so players can kick it backwards. Is it really that hard for players to remember to kick it forward?
