    Season review 24/25

1st Season. Didn't think I would last by the first five games or so. But got there with the help of you folks and fellow referees, advisors and association managers. New ground to tread next season with promotion opening up possibilities!

Decision on challenge - how would you have handled this?

If you think the player is going in excessively and dangerously, then for me it is irrelevant what level it is and I think it would be a case of "what the game expects" as your decision.

COMET App 'You are not allowed to execute this action!'

When comet works it is great, but it really can be completely useless if not set up properly.

    A year today

It has now been a full year since I qualified as a ref. I can recall the first months being the most stressful and having a masscon in only my 2nd match really tried my resolve to continue. I won't lie - there have been times - usually right after games that I have thought about packing it all...

    Abandoned game due to abuse.

It's a turn off for any new referee to read about all this and even worse to experience it. I am thankful for this resource in that it helps me realise we have support and advice ready for each other where it seems there is none and the only option is to chuck it. The truth is that you will be...

COMET App 'You are not allowed to execute this action!'

Sometimes logging out and logging back in again fixes this issue. Also check to make sure you are not on Demo mode.

Spicy Local Derby, even at U13s

I have come to expect younger players not to make any attempt to shake my hand. The coaches as adults however should know better.

    Arsenal v PSG

When you leave 5 or 6 players to be in an onside position until the very last second, why be surprised when one is offside? It is such a silly tactic. Was surprised the AR was moving back to the centre, it was quite easy to spot. Didn't need to leave it to VAR.

When does appealing become dissent / was I wrong to sin bin?

Sounds like frustration than dissent, but of course YHTBT to really see what the body language was like. Contemplating on these decisions is how we learn and grow as officials. Every ref has their own tolerance level and players should be able to learn that - especially if you have reffed...

    U15 Tier 1 Bad Match

As others have pointed out, it is more experience than skill a lot of us new refs lack. I am in my 50s and just about to complete my first season. My own ref association won't advise anyone going above U13/14s for the first year. In Scotland we actually have Club Academy games. These are games...

    giving cautions

I am just new myself but you will eventually get an instinctive feeling when a sanction is due. You are finding your tolerances, but your tolerance does not override the LOTG and when you should show a card. As someone else said, you are not there to be friends but you are there to be fair and...

    Liverpool vs Everton

I think fans are more forgiving of an offside "goal" that is just a few inches than a shocking challenge like this, just being looked at and still being a yellow!

    Game Yesterday

I'm not that experienced, this being my first season. I am learning, slowly but surely that we shouldn't be looking for anything but respect on that pitch. Yes, have banter but to many players you are also the opposition, especially if they take a dislike to your decisions. Explaining stuff...

Junior/Youth Red cards in Youth football

I have to laugh when they give the "it's a kids football match" but you hear the coaches cursing away and even encouraging their players to block early free kicks or "get stuck into them!" or infamous "hit them!". The cards are about match control. If you give a yellow for the dogso outside...

    Time keeping

Pretty much the same as JamesL, although I mostly look at time-wasting more than anything, including players that have delayed the restart. I use 2 watches: a smart watch that counts down and a Casio stopwatch that counts up. I stop the watch that counts up - the smart watch is left alone as...

    "Can they do that?"

It seems that as it happens so often where the ball is played backwards at a kick-off, that it is the only direction it can travel. The amount of players who have come up to me and said that if the ball is played forward then it is not a proper kick off is quite high. So habits can create...

    Questions about first Match

One thing you haven't included in the schedule is your warm up. A good amount of time doing stretches etc. I also do one quick walk around the pitch and check the safety and positioning of the goals while doing that walk. Then check the pitch for safety issues and report any concerns to the...
