I live in a county where I rarely referee in that county because, besides a few local sides, every team is an hour away.
So I have a shirt with that badge and one with the other county's badge. This is not necessary but I chose to because sometimes local sides go and play in that other county...
For sure, but when I'm only being offered obs on Sunday men's games with no structured touchline infrastructure... hinders match control a tad because you look like a jobsworth and they don't give a monkeys
My promotion was nearly derailed in part because an observer expected me to run to halfway and see every rolling sub on and off, with CARs in place.
Players still left and came on around the same time and I did check equipment but some of them weren't on half way and I got a 6.5 lol
Two easiest ways to avoid this that I find work well:
I don't let substitutes or under 18s run the line.
The former can be harder to argue but basically say you need to brief whoever does it and cannot do that 3-4 times a game. The latter just say it's a safeguarding issue (which it is).
I have never coached but played a fair bit before and whilst being a referee.
I was a total pain in the ass as a player, knew enough of the laws to speak with confidence but not enough to be consistently right. Autistic too so if I felt you were wrong I was not changing my mind.
It helps now...
Saw this challenge from both angles, this one is much closer to the referees angle and I’m guessing he went yellow because of direction and defenders?
I think I could justify both yellow and red to an assessor. Welcome any thoughts because I’ll get asked about this one on my next WNL game
Red for me. Plants his studs on the opponents leg and then rakes, it only looks a bit better because he catches the leg as it’s in the air. If it’s the planted leg then he’s nearly at knee height. BUT I’m not expecting VAR to overturn if MO gives a yellow there
It’s impossible to tell from the video because you cannot see if there’s any contact etc but given we know there was and assuming the referee saw it then it’s the right call
Good old "very experienced chaps" eh?
I always prioritise treatment over a card unless I need to flash it to cool down a situation, most often though a quick wave to the physio will not delay a card much
This kind of loose phrases create a headache for refs who apply the law though.
I gave a penalty this weekend for a player with both arms out in front of her as she jumped, arguably a natural position for a person in a jumping motion but it made her body unnaturally bigger and was a penalty...
I don't agree with shaming someone for being unavailable, but coming off games can cause a massive headache and even postpone games for teams so I can see why leagues get frustrated.
I am cautious with my availability so I never have to put my appointment officers out unless it's a genuine...
Nice insight, I'm guessing because no offside offence has been committed yet and we cannot say whether he will commit one, the defender could get the ball and then be challenged etc etc
