Sadly, I think you are right. Also, I tuned in for the 2nd half about 2 mins before it started & to hear the message being converted of ‘Love’ with Trump in attendance (though probably in hospitality networking) came across as nauseating/insincere - I reckon the children involved were sincere, but not FIFA who organised it & certainly not Trump.

I don't like Shearer one bit as a person. However, after the ref stopped a corner kick from being taken for one of his little chats with the participants, I couldn't help but agree with Big Al when he stated 'referees are the biggest cause of DTR'

I do think many people's thoughts on Argentina is masked by history and of course having the audacity to beat England fair and square.
Yes there approach is very physical but if that was England and it was successful, apart from a few footballing snobs out there, people will be loving it.
I was surprised by Argentina's lack of attacking play especially as just 4 years ago they were a part of one the best ever finals I have ever seen. There physicality is no surprise but was it really over the top? I see the word cheats mentioned in here which is surprising words for referees(which most in here are) to come out with on this forum and expect more from a fan forum.
Of course the scenes at the end was a disgrace but again I think it's over exaggerated because who it was, from what I seen it was just one player who lashed out and there was a small brawl but most of it was players trying to break it up, we have seen worse brawls in English football than that.

You could use that argument about any rivalry (England v Germany, Man Utd v Leeds, Barcelona v Real Madrid etc) that is not directly local neighbours (Man Utd v Man City, Arsenal v Spurs for other examples)...
This hatred more stems from issues such as political (Falklands) as well as the footballing injustices such as Maradona.
It's a culture thing more than anything else.
We don't like bad sportsmanship here in the UK but in South America, it's considered normal and a justifiable reaction. Similar with Africa.
"The audacity to beat England" comment is utter rubbish since the vast majority of English anger and frustration over the result was aimed at Tuchel and the players rather than the Argentines.
Historically, you're right, they do conjure up a negative image for us but it's still based on fact. Maradona's cheat goal, Simeone's histrionics to get Beckham sent off, even last week with blatant political posturing with the Falklands banner just to rub it in and offend the UK.
And no, I don't believe that our players adopting their "physical" approach would be "loved" in any way owing to what I wrote above.
Referees on here or not, professional football is a culture that is based on cheating. Once you acknowledge that, you can develop the required skills of a referee but globally, there is a line and Argentina both historically and currently, cross over it.
I came away from the game against Argentina feeling no sense of injustice... but... is it entirely fair and square when Messi steps on Spence's foot to win the ball and Spence doesn't throw himself to the ground, he carries on, and they score and win the match, yet in the final Otamendi (I think) gets his toe stood on, throws himself to ground and goal disallowed?
My pleasure at them losing is as much to do with reactions after events as any physicality during the match. Fernandez's goal celebration, Barco celebrating in our players faces rather than with his team mates, the banner (and their nonsense claim about the Falklands), Enzo's tantrums in the final and taking so long to leave the pitch, Paredes swinging punches at Spanish players for as you put it, having the audacity to beat them fair and square.

We all know if England was a physical side and they have success with it nobody will complain. I mean when Spence instigated the contact against Norway to win a penalty, you had Lee Dixon suggesting that the contact could be instigated but he doesn't care because it's a positive result for the team he supports. Whilst I'm not quite saying instigating contact to win a foul is cheating, if the boot was on the other foot and it was against England I bet there be people out there would say that is cheating/conning the ref.
England as in football in general were probably more physical in the past. The get in their faces approach, don't let them have time on the ball etc but then England got obsessed how the Spanish played and tried and failed to bring that in.
Maybe I'm old school but I enjoyed the first 15 to 20 mins of the England Argentina game, neither team give the other anytime on the ball, some tackles flying in, a bit of pushing and shoving but I don't recall anything too untoward and the referee kept a lid on it and things did settle down.
There's a huge difference between physical play and downright thuggery, and Argentina's play was on the wrong side of that line. Especially the shenanigans after the game, not just the violent conduct by Parades (and at least one coach), but also the childish turning their backs on the Spanish players. There's a way to lose gracefully and that most definitely wasn't it.
I don't think England fans wanted Argentina to lose because they knocked us out, but their general behaviour and the Falklands banner definitely swayed me in that direction. I like teams that play physically, but not like that, and I certainly can't stand bad losers.
That said, I'm just waiting for Infantino to announce that Argentina have been awarded the FIFA sporting play prize for the 2026 World Cup.
