The Ref Stop

VArg Egypt

The Ref Stop
Wasn't clear and obvious. Rather too subjective for my liking. Personally, I wouldn't have given a FK, purely because Martinez went down holding his shin lol

Think there's a (minor) accidental stamp on the foot contact

Not for me, incredibly soft and 100% re-refereeing - as ever VAR rubber stamping cheating

Note also was the scorer carded for removing his shirt to celebrate?? He was, fair enough!

*that's not getting ruled out

Yeh 22 mins for dark forces to keep the third favourites in the comp
I didn't like that disallowed goal one bit. A minor SP, took the opportunity to chuck himself to the ground, ref doesn't want a goal for Arg from such a soft FK so he and VAR deny the Africans instead despite a full length of the pitch wonderful goal on the break. And yes, I see it as reasonable to doubt motives after the last 48 hours. Easy to have a light touch with VAR when the games are meaningless, not so easy when the big lads are on the ropes

Game off!
Kicked off! Not surprised
VAR and Africans don't seem to mix too well, but they had the game won regardless. The game will probably take something out of the Argies though. Can't get that lucky too many times even with 'everything' on your side

Expect Colombia, if they get through, to beat them

Yes, they've been decent. Should've scored a hat full against Ghana. We're at the business end now though and I'd be surprised if a team from outside the last 10 can get beyond the mirky waters of a FIFA semi-final

I can't entertain any notion of a foul on Sala, that would be moronic
But that's the nonsense you get when Pandoras Box is spewing its guts out everywhere. Not condoning the behaviour of the Egypt TA, but the provocation of that bloody monitor and perceived injustice against the big teams doesn't help a jot

Yeah neither claim of a foul is a foul, I don't think there's much controversy there in isolation.

I’m kind of OK with that intervention. Might have been a long way from goal but was sustained holding and dragged him to the floor. I’d rather they didn’t get involved but I certainly don’t think it was wrong, and they were definitely right not to get involved in the supposed foul for Egypt just before Argentina scored.

Just to clarify
It is a strong belief of mine that the balance of decisions will always go with the top sides. If every decision is only biased by a few percent, it makes a big difference over 90 mins. And if we're honest with ourselves, most of us will have decided games in this way. Even in local parks football, the top few sides get most things there way. It's chicken and egg, that's sometimes why they're doing well, because they bully the ref and opposition.
That's not corruption by the way. That's human nature. The VAR in this game would've shat himself when Zico scored. Probably praying for him to miss

At the top level, officials might never see the light of day again if they murder a top side with an absolute clanger. Not rare these days for the VARs to need enhanced security at home after causing upset in the upper ranks
Anyway, let's just say it takes an awful lot to get a shock result once the trophy is within reach. Perhaps even a miracle

I look at it the other way, the bigger nations and clubs get more big decisions in their favour as they spend way more time on average in the opponents half and penalty area. If you spend 75% of the time in your opponents half you are clearly have more penalty appeals for you and less against you.

I laughed when Burnley complained last season that they had few penalty decisions go their way, that’s because they barely got out of their own half.

He stepped on Martinez’s foot, turned the ball over and they scored from that turnover - C&O is up for debate, but it’s a defensible intervention and the refs need some protection from all the allegations coming their way.

Just because Trump and Infantino have lost the plot doesn’t mean the refs are all somehow in on it, and there have been some serious over-reactions on the Egyptian side. The trouble is that the credibility of the tournament has been damaged by a clearly unscrupulous act and so now everyone has carte blanche to call it “rigged” and channel their anger at the referees.
