He wouldn’t be there if he wasn’t. People don’t get to world cups by accident.sorry that its come to this stage, but does anyone know if this ref is usually incompetent. theres bad foul recognition and then theres... this. something seems very dodgy
You have to wonder how much politics factored into this. Tantashev is an Uzbek, just like Ravshan Irmatov. Irmatov - who clearly had his own issues on the field in World Cups - still does a lot with FIFA.He wouldn’t be there if he wasn’t. People don’t get to world cups by accident.
Perhaps the occasion got to him![]()

The scuffing the penalty spot behind the referee - also should be AR1 ensuring the card gets given.
Can’t hide anyone at this level of football & nor indeed at any level of football. There must have been good reason for his appointment, but just not worked out on the day & as has been said, (extremely) likely to be on a plane home. This is just sad. No foul recognition, no confidence, no management ability. The penalty should have been an easy on-field call, as should a bunch of other fouls.
This was simply terrible assigning. The only possible thing I can consider is Collina and his assigning team thought France would cruise to an easy win and that they could somehow hide Tantashev. That clearly did not happen. This is the equivalent of a Sunday morning men's league match or an American men's junior college match where the referee loses control early and never has a chance to regain it.
The contrasts between Michael Oliver and Tantashev being able to rein in a challenging game - or not - are striking.
Would you care to elaborate on this?Irmatov - who clearly had his own issues on the field in World Cups
If memory serves, he was the Referee who whistled for a penalty then saw the ball entering the goal so changed his signal to "goal"Would you care to elaborate on this?
He was, but that was the Confederations Cup, so I was wondering what "issues" @RefIADad was referring to from any of his World Cup matchesIf memory serves, he was the Referee who whistled for a penalty then saw the ball entering the goal so changed his signal to "goal"
