The Ref Stop

England Vs DR Congo

The Ref Stop
The reverse angle shows that no penalty was a great call. I actually think Kane’s on field behaviour is rather dislikeable.

Oh and thankyou for just calling the thread England vs Congo not ‘DR Congo’. Not so bad written down, but for reasons I can’t explain hearing everyone call them DR Congo rather than just Congo has being doing my nut in.

Bookies for British customers.
They'll be hedging their bets that most will be backing England and if they did win/qualify then its a win for the bookies pocket (bigger odds, more payout).
Bet365 are international bookies and the odds will be in line with betting exchanges used worldwide. Statistically we’re narrow favourites to win. But it’s not a million miles from a coin flip.

Agree, it will be very close. A lot is being made though of them having only lost 2 in 88 at home, but they play in CONCACAF so aside from USA and Canada they only really play Central American and Caribbean nations who are all lowly ranked. And the two they did lose were Costa Rica and Honduras.

Will be interesting to see who they choose to referee that one, can't be UEFA or CONCACEF so my guess would be African or Asian, I think South American might be seen as too close to home.

@RustyRef please can we change the thread title to the correct country name? Wouldn't want anyone thinking we were playing against the wrong country :D:D:D

I can't say I've ever had that feeling watching Kane - Bellingham on the other hand... :mute:

It's referred to as DR Congo because there are two nations, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo.
I know this, but they are still both colloquially called Congo. Since there’s only one at the tournament, I think it’s safe to just call them that, rather than DR Congo in speech. It just sounds off.
If you’re shortening it, shorten it properly. If you don’t want to, then call them their proper name, ‘the Democratic Republic of the Congo’

I’m aware it’s a strange battle to pick, but it irritates me 🤣

There's a lot of politics behind these things. If you shorten too much then you can upset the other country who might take it the wrong way and think you aren't properly recognising their existence!

Was supposed to @, @RefereeX . Not sure how that happened. Zaire an old name for Democratic Republic of the Congo

Anyway Republic of Congo is named at the UN as simply Congo, so I was wrong to shorten Democratic Republic of the Congo to Congo.

Is now a good time to tell about what happened to my contact database integration when the ISO international naming standards for the Congos changed? Don’t even get me started on Burma!

But they're still both colloquially known as Congo, so if you're not calling them their full name, Congo is every bit as valid a shortened version as DR Congo, and is way easier.
