The Ref Stop

Germany vs Curacao

The Ref Stop
At least all three of the letters are in 'Bosnia and Herzegovina'... where the hell does the W come from for Curaçao?!
Their ISO country code is CW, no idea why but it is, their internet domain is .cw. They need three characters for the World Cup so FIFA stuck a U in there.

Does anyone know why Curaçao's three letter initial is CUW? It's really annoying me 🤣
You asked for it!
"According to Curacao's own regulatory authority, the country was assigned the code 'CW' by the ISO in 2010 after it gained a new constitutional status, changing to an autonomous nation within the Dutch Kingdom having previous been part of the island territory known as the Netherlands Antilles. You will therefore see things like .cw as part of Curacao web addresses.

However, for things like territory codes on scoreboxes, a third letter was required. There is no specific explanation offered by the relevant authorities as to why 'CUR' was not chosen, but the implication is this would have been potentially confusing alongside 'CUB' for Cuba, or the fact that Costa Rica has the ISO code of .cr.

As a result, Curacao went with a 'U' to form 'CUW'"

You're welcome 😁

Bosnia and Herzegovina wasn’t BIH, it was intended to be B/H with a fancy but straight / (I believe)
According sportingnews.com:

"The word 'i' means "and" in the local languages -- Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian. So the BiH abbreviation is simply the three words in their language, Bosnia and Herzegovina, or Bosnia i Herzegovina. It's that simple."

I stand corrected. I just assumed it was meant to be a slash 🤣

Another point that irritates me like hell about abbreviations…
When you see it all over social media that people are losing their minds that when Sweden play Denmark the abbreviations will said SWE-DEN and more so that the unused letters will say DEN-MARK.
It’s bloody obvious that if one is true, the other must be true. You’re replacing one Den, with another Den.

To add on to this, I’ve just seen that the reason the W was selected, was because when being assigned a new 2 letter ISO code, CU, CR, CC and even CX were already taken, so CW was selected because of the capital city Willemstad.
So effectively CUW stands for CUracao Willemstad

They wanted CUC for TV, but heard a certain political figure might take umbrage at an implied slight…
