The Ref Stop
Oh Rusty, that's such a supporter thing to say.
A toenail scraping the ball doesn't negate the trip.
The ball barely moves and is easily in Maddison's playing distance.

Not heard of getting a toe on the ball? I would agree it would be a penalty if he went through the player and then got a toe on the ball but he plays the ball first then takes down Maddison.

Very fine margins though and it's an excellent decision by Gillett seeing that touch on the ball in real time.

"Played the ball first!" 🤯

Have I stumbled onto a Leeds' fan forum?
Dare comment myself but I always thought that getting the ball first was never in the laws. Its how you get the ball that is the fault if any. From behind/side like that its a foul anywhere else on the pitch.

Not really, as he gets the ball and it is then just natural football contact which Maddison makes the most of. Had he just got a slight touch on the ball and then wiped out Maddison carelessly or recklessly it would be a penalty, but he didn't. It isn't a penalty, and most certainly wasn't a clear and obvious error and enough for a VAR review..

IIRC, no longer having my old books, at one point a tackle from behind was explicitly a foul if contact was made before the ball was played. That was before CREF was invented. While not formally in the Laws, I think it remains a real factor in determining CREF—a lesser degree of contact is careless if it takes place before the ball is played than after the ball was played. The player’s “but I got ball,” is an overstatement as they mean “as long as I touched the ball at some point it can’t be a foul no matter what else I did.” But that doesn’t mean getting the ball is irrelevant in considering whether the play was careless or reckless. (I’m failing to picture a scenario where it would change excessive force, but perhaps there is one.)
