The Ref Stop

Wolves v Sunderland - Hair Pulling

The Ref Stop
But they've made a rod for their own back by giving red for any impression of a hair tug.
The one earlier this season, on Cucurella I think, was so obvious I fully understood it.
Then a couple went unpunished and no one thought anything of it. Now it seems to be every challenge.
I wouldn't be surprised if teams start buying players with longer hair just to take advantage (and yes this is satire).

Another case of the hand accidentally getting caught in the hair. Nothing to see here.
That is what most look like.
The DCL one recently, the Brentford one against Fulham.
Camera stills make it look like a tug but it could very much be a trick of the camera/eye making it look that way. Both not given.
Yesterdays one very similar but this time given.
The one by Martinez on DCL you could actually see a proper head back reaction to an actual pull.

I am in total agreement that hair pulls should be a red card, but even as a wolves fan, this should never have been a red card.

It’s possibly the 10am breakfast sambuca talking but not sure I even see a foul.
I'd tend to agree tbh. And if there is an argument for careless, it's definitely nothing more. Even a yellow card here would have been wrong imho.

With a hair pull, it's either a red or no foul. I find it very difficult to understanding how one can justify anything in between.

I am very much in the red camp for hair pull. But it has to have intent as a factor.

EDIT: I have now seen the full replay and changing my mind on this. I dont think it is an accidental hand getting caught in the hair. The 'hold' on the hair started before the OP replay started and it went for a considerable duration. Basically there was ample opportunity to let go of it.

This is on the referee’s deciding to interpret something that is simply not there.

HW needs to revisit his referee’s interpretation of contact with the hair.

Not fair. This isn’t on the individual refs. HW has made clear that hair pulling is unacceptable and red. Don’t blame individual refs for doing g what they are told to do.

I thought I was alone...

I'm seeing something different from everyone I guess.
This is the most deserving of the 4 red cards for hair pulling this season.
He has hold of his hair for ages. Hair feels different from shirt. Knows what he's doing IMO

Did it have force?
Not really. But I don't think any of the 4 red cards had force.

however I would add that if I grab a players hair as he runs past me, technically I am applying no force but it would be much more violent that anything we've seen in thr EPL recently.

Based on PGMOL’s guidance, (and Howard Webb)hair pulling requires force.

Granted that some of the examples we have seen are very much borderline

That's the thing for me, if someone is running and a player grabs some strands of hair the force increases and it justifies a red card, from a standing position, the force I'm seeing in some of these incidents just does not warrant a red card for me. I actually think the Calvert Lewin one in the semi finals is more of a red card than this one as the Chelsea player was running.

Of course the simple solution is, don't put your hands near an oppositions hair when challenging for the ball and there would be no issues.

I would not be surprised if the PGMO do think about changing the guidance on it though.
