What’s the view people?

Martinez punch to back of head of Jesus? I was surprised VAR didn’t send to monitor.

The handball before the goal I can see as not being conclusive so on field decision should stand.

Thoughts?

The Ref Stop
Everton player got sent off for a little friendly slap round the face. Martinez punched Jesus in the back of the head. Something you get disqualified for in boxing.
I can guarantee ref watch will say there wasn't enough 'force'.

The Maguire handball is the one I don't get. Flung himself in front of the ball to stop the shot. Arms outstretched to make himself bigger and the hand stops a goal bound shot.

Agree with first point, but not sure about handball. I think he is sliding and trying to stop his fall. I feel it would have been harsh.

Was Maguire falling over? Or was he throwing his body on the line and making himself a lot bigger to stop a goal?

While I will caveat this by saying I haven’t seen the incident you’re referring to (Martinez)… I’m gonna assume there’s a very clear difference.

Firstly, a little friendly slap is a strange concept, but it was not friendly (not many slaps are)
Secondly, it’s a totally different part of law with different considerations (again, I’m assuming on the basis of the Martinez one. I’ve not seen it)
The Everton player was sent off for violent conduct, because his action wasn’t challenging for the ball and that means that any contact hand to face / head that is more than negligible is a red card.
If Martinez is challenging for the ball and makes contact with the head as part of that attempt to play the ball, the bar for force of contact would become much higher

It wasn’t on the line. I do get your point, but IFAB actually gives this as an example of not hand ball.
Had Maguire's arm been beside him or close, it would make sense, but it was outstretched and away from his body.

From IFAB website for examples for law 12 :

An attacker (Team A) attempts to pass the ball. A defender (Team B) makes a slide tackle to block the pass. The ball touches the right arm which is clearly extended away from the body and is not supporting the body. What is the correct decision?

It is a handball offence. A player is considered to have made their body unnaturally bigger when the position of their arm is not a consequence of, or justifiable by, the player’s body movement for that specific situation. The referee will award a direct free kick (or penalty kick) to Team A.

From memory Maguire's was sliding forward to block the ball. The arm was away from his body towards the ground to support his 'fall' (natural position for action). Not too long ago this specific example (hand away from body to support fall) was part of the laws of the game as not a handball. While that and a few other specific ones (e.g hand above shoulder, ball bouncing from body/foot) have been removed to give the discretion to the referee. But referees still use them as guide/considerations.

The Maguire incident will have mixed views, so by that standard I don’t think anyone can say it was a clear & obvious error (of course ex Man Utd Neville dismissed the claims of a penalty immediately from his commentary position lol!). Unusually perhaps, VAR only took seconds to turn down during open play.

Fairly straightforward decision for me.

The example you give above doesn't paint a clear picture of (Maguire's) body position and also gives the answer anyway!!

Maguire was falling sideways to the floor and did what anybody in that situation would do which is to break their fall with their hand.

Yeah, that's where I'm at with it. He was falling over and it is completely natural to support your fall.

Strange how the handball is more or less what people have focused on. For me the red card for violent conduct was more interesting.

If you watch it again, you could say he punches him in the chest first, while competing for the ball. Don't mind that, bit of benefit of doubt.

But the punch in the head, when the ball was out of play, not playable for either player, there is simply no justification for it.
