Is there any form of database that I can tap into to find out the level of a Referee without having to either ask the person himself/herself or the County FA?

The Ref Stop
Some leagues I’m on list referees by level at the start of the season. Admittedly doesn’t account for mid season promotions but might be an (imperfect) option?

I am not aware of any source for the information - sorry!
Ok - thank you & at least I know/had it confirmed. In the end, a short while ago I went to the appointments officer of the league the AR I wanted to know about was appointed to & he came straight back to me with the information I was seeking. If I was that determined if the AO wasn’t around etc, I’m sure I could have asked the county FA, but with a new RDO still awaited, I may have not received the info I was looking to obtain quickly.

If there are any conspiracy theorists on here, they may wonder why you need the info. Just saying ;)

To hopefully put the conspiracy theorists to bed, it was just me being interested why a Referee would place a L7 on a Senior Line for his first game on a Step 5 League (despite being AR1 on MOAS) & I believed to be a more experienced Referee (& is a L5) on the other line. I can only imagine the Referee hadn’t asked their history before or at the time of him deciding.

There's plenty of level 5s who make it very clear they don't want to go bench side, and may cause issues if you make them.
Whereas newer refs are often very keen to go bench side.

Most times on MOAS AR1 will just be the first appointed.

Could well be down to history of l5. There is a bit of a trend now of senior going non-bench side so they don't fall out with benches. The true reason could only be found by asking the ref themselves really

The order on MOAS means nothing in terms of seniority, it's just a listing of officials. Referee establishes who will be bench side.

Absolutely with MOAS, which made me wonder. Although the comments of others is accepted, during the PMD I didn’t think it would have been appropriate to have asked, especially when the L7 had some difficult moments & wouldn’t have done him any favours had I asked the Referee why he appointed him and not his colleague to have responsibilities for the T/As. Of course, I could have asked the Referee at any point well after the game & even now, which I am pondering over.

I'm not aware of a publicly available database showing referee levels. It will exist on the FA systems, but access is restricted to them and the CFAs.

I would often put the junior AR bench side, usually if the senior AR told me he had previous with one of the clubs. Pointless risking further problems so safer to switch them over. I did it with one AR because I knew he had a reputation for starting a fight in an empty room so I didn't want him anywhere near the managers and coaches, dressed it up as wanting to give the junior AR experience. And again when the senior AR wore really thick, jam jar like, spectacles, my coach was at the game and told me to switch them to avoid the risk of the benches making comments.

Then on one occasion where I was supposed to be AR2 I was completely stitched up by AR1. We did the coin toss then as soon as the three of us shook hands he sprinted like Usain Bolt to the non-bench touchline, leaving me with pretty much no choice but to go bench side. We had words at half time but both him and the referee couldn't stop laughing so I just had to admit they'd got me 😂

I like to listen to the pre-match briefing, as that usually includes the issue of senior/bench side (and often some interesting discussion😁)

Agree with the others. MOAS AR1 vs AR2 only really comes in to it on step 2 and above where there are 4th officials so it becomes rather irrelevant. I always put a specialist AR as senior if I have one, if not I put whichever referee I know best or has more experience, or if they're both on par in my eyes I just let them choose between themselves.

There used to be a "Find a referee" search engine on County FA sites.

The user would input the date required and the venue postcode along with a mile radius for travel (from the venue).

The search would then throw up a list for you with contact details - including the referee's officiating level. This was obviously only referees that had registered/affiliated that season though.

This disappeared around 5/6 years ago IIRC - likely due to DP constraints. :)
