Censorship
Chris Moore, former EFL player and now manager of Hanwell Town has criticised the referee with saying "how can they compete when this happens".

The penalty (assume it was a penalty, one was scored in the game) looks to me to be outside the area but he only has one look. But where was assistant in this? I know he is out of picture but surely he is closer to the "line" to tell if in or out.

But the goal that led from the ball hitting him is very odd.
Apparently he said it never hit him. I dont know about any of you lot but I know if a ball has struck me. Is he in the wrong position here? Too close to play? I dont think hes that close and certainly didnt expect a pass across him like that I'd imagine. Just unlucky. But if he genuinely didnt think the ball struck him im very worried.
Not only did it change possession, but it literally created an attack that led to a goal within 3 touches.

Edit..

Lots happened in the last minutes of the game.
I also personally know the ref, good friends with him (didn't realise he was on this gsme until I saw the website below). He is normally very aware of situations so surprised if he felt he didn't touch the ball.

the foul definitely looks outside, cant tell how far away he is to make the call but can't imagine he has a good angle - as you say the AR could probably help (maybe they did and also got it wrong?!)

the other one though, very strange - not a glance or a flick as i'd imagined it must have been, but a full on ricochet!

It's not a foul. Looks like attacker makes contact with the back of the goalies leg

We have that ability only because someone filmed it and uploaded.
The ref doesn't and deemed it a foul.

The first question we should be asking ourselves in this instance is "is it in or outside the area?".
We all know referees have one look at things, especially at this level.
I, personally, am happy with the foul call.
If a penalty has been given, I'd hope that the assistant was closer to the edge of area and sold it to the ref as I would not be 100% certain of it being inside here.
I was taught that when awarding a penalty, you're virtually awarding a goal (which is why I was also taught a higher threshold for fouls in area). So to give a penalty you have to be absolutely certain all things are ticked including location of offence.
Just not sold on this one.

I'm not sure how much help the assistant is going to be. The attackers body is between him and the contact point.
The assistant may not sure at what point the referee considered a foul to have take place.

Where I paused it, I wouldn't be 100% sure if it's inside or outside.

You shouldn't need more than one view to know this isn't a foul. I suspect the referee's view was blocked by the defender.

Contact looks to be extremely close to the line if not on it, so I don't have a problem with the referee going inside. However, I don't think it's a foul. Looks like keeper has played the ball fairly, attacker has got there second and gone over the keeper.

As for the touch, I don't think any referee is going to knowingly lie and say the ball didn't touch them if they're aware it did - I can only presume that as he looks to be keeping a trailing eye on the slide by the red player, his brain hasn't registered the fact that the ball's hit him on his heel.

The video quality on the pen is quite poor and it is from a good distance as well so we can't have a definitive answer from it.
From a learning view point, I see the problem being the referee is in a very poor position. At the instance of contact he must be around 35m-40m away. Three problems with that, difficult to identify a foul from that distance. In/out is another problem. But the biggest problem is not being able to sell whatever decision you make.

The learning from the other incident is awareness. He has missed something there. either missed ball clearly hitting him. Or if he felt it, he missed that he has to stop the game for a dropped ball. IMO that is due to him either concentrating too focussed on one thing and missing other things or his mind has gone wandering altogether.

That touch of the ball is diabolical hahaa, to style it out by saying "nah didn't touch me" is hilarious

I do feel sorry for his positioning. As the he is slightly behind play and the attacker takes a touch into him. But blow your whistle man.

The most logical conclusion is that he "styled it out" to save face. However the ball hitting him not registering in his brain is not entirely illogical.

I have seen other incidents that defy logic. Here is one with two in the space of a few seconds, player and referee(s).

Had a momentary brainfart similar to this a couple of weeks ago - it was such an odd situation that the ‘normal’ thinking just didn’t kick in straight away.

Once that goal is scored after hitting the referee one of the assistants needs to get their flag up in the air and tell the referee was happened.

A situation where the referee is non-subjectivly wrong in law might only happen once every 3 years.
It's very easy just to do nothing and put the blame on the referee.
Hopefully a good observer would reward with an 8 or 8.5 for support to the referee.
