Was there actually any contact? I thought the foot was high but it missed, pretty sure had there been any significant contact an EPL player would have milked it was more than he did to try and get an opponent sent off. Granted I wasn't really concentrating at that point though so could be wrong.Conversely, give a yellow card when the Liverpool player is kicked in the head within 5 minutes and maybe you find the players respond and it ends up a more controlled game? He often pitches it too tolerant for my liking, and I think in future this game will be the case study for why I don't like starting games with an intent to be lenient.
You've obviously never watched Sam Allison referee then, he does it at pretty much every corner or attacking set piece.I’ve never ever seen them do it anywhere as near as much as Hooper did tonight. There’s no benefit, only frustration for people as it delays the restart. People want the game flowing
And apart from Hooper not being perfect (which is never going to happen with any Referee, or some may say, far from perfect, he has to be given some credit where many thought the same as you - very entertaining. You've obviously never watched Sam Allison referee then, he does it at pretty much every corner or attacking set piece.
Hooper might well argue that it was an intentional ploy to slow things down to try and take some heat out of the game, after all referees are rewarded for such ploys in observations right through the pyramid. As I said I've never seen so many fouls in a half of football and there can't be any doubt that the temperature was very high. It emerged today that the ball was only in play for 40.8% of the game, the lowest in an EPL game since 2010, and very little of that was due to Hooper holding up corners, it was just a very scrappy game, whilst also somehow being very entertaining.
Yes, and him doing it so often frustrates everyone. Warn them once. If they do something afterwards, give the fk or pk.You've obviously never watched Sam Allison referee then, he does it at pretty much every corner or attacking set piece.

I’m not sure frustrating both sides can be classed as playing his part. And apart from Hooper not being perfect (which is never going to happen with any Referee, or some may say, far from perfect, he has to be given some credit where many thought the same as you - very entertaining.
It wouldn’t be fair for me to comment because I haven’t seen any of the game with my previous comment being general. What I can say is that from all the games I have seen him do, I don’t think he deserves the bad press he often receives. I quite like watching his performances.I’m not sure frustrating both sides can be classed as playing his part.
I’m not sure I’ve seen a referee give so many soft fouls in a defensive area in the last few years. Especially after we were told they’d try and clamp down on this.
2 seasons ago I’d say he was our best official at that point. Probably should have got the FA Cup Final that year. But other than that, can’t say I’m ever convinced by him.It wouldn’t be fair for me to comment because I haven’t seen any of the game with my previous comment being general. He gave a DFK. So either he saw a player get kicked in the head and went "yeah, no need for a card there" or he incorrectly gave a DFK for a no-contact PIADM.Was there actually any contact? I can’t defend the indefensible, but generally I will defend all when I consider they need defending whether I like them or not. Reason being it’s so easy for anyone to criticise them and although they get handsomely paid etc, the amount of pressure all are under (though their choice) is something virtually everyone on this form cannot appreciate or faced themselves. Also, the skill and pace players undertake their antics is almost impossible to detect with a naked eye, though so easy to identify from an armchair, with a repeat/slo-mo button.Who don't you like?
I've noticed you defending PL officials pretty much regardless - but if you've specifically highlighted Hooper as someone you particularly like, that implies there must be some you're generally less impressed by?

And your point is just what exactly? Were more than 5 minutes wasted yesterday by talking to players at corners? No not even close. Did he do it twice on the same corner? No.
I’m merely pointing out your hypocrisy. One post you say them doing it is and pet hate and ludicrous. The next it is all about managing the game. And your point is just what exactly? Trawling back through my posts to try and point score, you might want to get a social life.
True about players but with some on hundreds and thousands per week, the pain should be a little easier to take - If any of them take the criticism on board, though some will.Players are under immense pressure, but they’re criticised. No reason referees can’t be.
Yes players are very quick, so it can be harder to judge incidents. But this is why these referees are said to be the best of the best. Otherwise, what makes them stand out from those lower down the pyramid?
Do they need defending though? They will be receiving observations and feedback, so there's no pretense from their bosses that they've done a perfect job. So it seems strange and naive to consistently insist on here that we can't also try to identify those same development points?I can’t defend the indefensible, but generally I will defend all when I consider they need defending whether I like them or not. Clearly my point was that if you have time to go back through my posts to try and point score you may have too much time on your hands. It is called sarcasm, something that you are perfectly adept at.I’m merely pointing out your hypocrisy. One post you say them doing it is and pet hate and ludicrous. Ah ah ah, need to get a social life? That is a personal comment. The second in as many weeks from yourself. But as a mod, you’ll get away with it.
As usual, it’ll be rinse and repeat. This thread will get closed and my comment maybe deleted. Whereas yours will stay and you’ll keep mod status.
Perhaps support rather than defend is the way I see it. They will certainly be receiving feedback and I’ve never said that any one on this forum can’t try & identify those same development points. In fact, I would encourage it. The issue I often have is that comments are often made (far from all) seem to be more of an attack/crticisms rather than constructive areas of development. If those on here received an observation report containing those comments they had made on another Referee, would they happy to receive them - I doubt it. So all I’m saying is, yes, everyone to have their own thoughts & opinions, after all this is a forum, but to perhaps be a bit more considerate to any Referee, none of whom go out to make mistakes.Do they need defending though?
