Saw Klopp has said he believes the new CWC is one of the worst ideas in football. Can’t say I disagree too much, but Kaveh Sokehol certainly doesn’t agree

Jurgen Klopp says Club World Cup is 'worst idea ever implemented in football' due to workload concerns

He has a point, but on the other hand if clubs weren’t there eg Man City & Chelsea they would be on tour somewhere eg Asia etc

So this is kind of where I’m at with it. I don’t think the footballing staff want to be involved in any of this, whether it be CWC or post- season tours, but the money people want it. But this is then a by-product of players wanting more and more money.

I don’t mind pre-season tours to these locations, but post-season seem really stupid (but is caused by above)

Preseason tour this is not

Fifa/uefa and in the end the fa/pl won't rest till the players are bled dry

I don’t think I agree with that in terms of the FA/PL. Do players play any more at this level than they did in the old days - I don’t think so. I get it that the pace of the game is so much quicker, but not only do the big teams have big squads, some ridiculously so, but the training & diet/nutrition is so much different - as well as the molley coddling & personal attention plyers receive/have access to, as well as much fewer cup replays!

Its all about getting a bigger piece of the pie. FIFA is not going to stop there. They will expand it and there will be qualification tournaments for it just like the bigger World Cup in near future. Mark my word.

Euro wanted to make more out of national teams (mainly FIFA territory) with Nations League. Now FIFA is doing the same with club teams. National FAs are also either expanding or holding on to their multiple league/cup games.

While there is push from players to reduce the number of games per year, none is willing to reduce the money they make out of the game. This is the word we live in. Money talks.

Players can’t have it both ways, but they do want it both ways. I can’t see where National FA’s are expanding, especially in England & their hold on cup games, both the League Cup & FA Cup with the PL teams is less than it used to be & the newish competition clubs are involved in (which I can’t remember its name at the moment), the bigger teams include their u21’s/u23s. However, I agree with your overall sentiment & I think FIFA etc can forget having a World Cup every two years, but who knows what they will try & do.

Think you mean the EFL/Vertu Trophy? That's open to 16 PL U21 sides and the L1/L2 teams. And the same for the National League Cup (albeit that's open to NL clubs rather than L1/L2).

My assumption was it was going to be like a test event the year before a World Cup.
However that's not the case it's another opportunity to sell something to the highest bidder (usually Asia), won't be long before they say it's too hot and they'll move it to Winter.

Anyone who listens to talkSPORT will have heard this debate time and time again. Martin Keown bangs on about players being overworked, Simon Jordan asks him if they would take a play cut to pay less games and there is complete radio silence, and therein lies the problem. Players earn ludicrous money these days, and that money has to come from somewhere. Taking a current example, Bryan Mbuemo is rumoured to be going to Man Utd for £250,000 a week. Don't get me wrong, he is a very good footballer, but that is a ridiculous wage, around £13 million a year. Only around 20% of Man Utd's revenue comes from match days, the rest all comes from commercial and broadcasting incomes, so you can see why the clubs have to explore all possible avenues to get money in. I know that Man U aren't in the club world cup, but they have gone on overseas post / pre-season trips even though their players claim to be exhausted.

I'm eligible to work a 4 day week, but if I do that my salary would be reduced by 20%, which is just basic common sense and economics. But footballers don't seem to grasp that, and therefore the people that make money out of footballers such as agents will continue to pursue more and more money.

I don't know whether it will be in 5 years or 20 years, but I'm sure that at some point there will be seismic event that will destroy the money in football. A bit like a bigger version of when ITV Digital went under and in doing so took football clubs with them.

As many have rightly pointed out, greed has a lot to do with this (although I will agree that it's not everything to do with it). As Rusty points out - less games = less money. If I ref 3 games in a week for £60, I make £180. If I choose to only referee 2, I can't possibly justify the same fee. Just like if I go to school and turn up to all of my lessons and work hard, I might do half decent. If I never show up and don't work, I'd fail. Common sense says that players need to take pay cuts if they want to play less, but they never seem to understand that! (For what it's worth, I think they should take pay cuts anyway!) Someone being paid tens of millions in a year has no right to complain about anything in my opinion.

Three word reply to your comments would be “hit”, nail”, “head”!

Simon Jordan is more intelligent than 99.9% of the population and I can't recall ever disagreeing with him

I'm basically sick of the Commoditisation of football, the increasing cavernous inequality between Club's finances and the overall impact on the direction in which elite refereeing is headed and the impact that has on the grass-roots game
I've stopped posting so much as I've lost interest. I haven't watched a single minute of this tournament and was discouraged from engaging in the Euro U21s because the comp was devalued by eligible players competing in the FIFA event instead

I'm intent on curtailing my commitment to refereeing next season and haven't booked the fitness test yet
The relevance of this to the OP topic, is that stuff like the Club World Cup contributes to my apathy for the overall game

But at Supply League level where you operate, your contribution as a Referee would I’m sure, be very much sought.
