The Ref Stop

WHU v MUN

For any of my fellow UK viewers watching the game in a unique way or any international viewers watching, thoughts on the pen.

Will try find a clip on social media.

For me not a pen, and certainly not a clear and obvious error. Gobsmacked MO sent Coote to screen for it.

Intrigued to hear an unbiased view on it tho

The Ref Stop
Watching Chelsea v Newcastle in amazement at the overturned pen (and the original decision). Comms all expected the pen to stand as there was contact but severely exaggerated. Delighted it was overturned

I can see it in slow motion... but its not clear and obvious

there does seem to be quite a bit force in the contact de ligts leg makes, so its not the worst decision ever, I just dont think its clear enough to overturn. If its given on field, it stays as a pen

I think we've seen 2 surprising var recommendations there. Though I think the Chelsea one gets the right decision 100%

Looks like a good spot by the VAR too me, maybe one of those where if it was the Champions League you won't be surprised to see an intervention but in the PL more so but it looks like a foul too me going by that clip.

Been a day of painfully slow VAR reviews. And plenty of them unfortunately. This West Ham one looks like unwanted interference on the face of it, although I won't lose any sleep when MU get a rare dose of misfortune. Historians will never reconcile how Ten Hag hung on for so long

This myth will continue even after we're relegated this season.

IMHO, as a neutral, that is a really poor VAR intervention, HW wont be happy, but often defends MO to the hilt, so we’ll see.

For me Ings comes charging into De Ligt so a normal football contact.

I wonder if football expects a penalty…..

VAR does but that is a differing thing. Nobody expects THAT to be a penalty. And this is only a penalty at one level where its possible to micro analyse something from varying angles, muse on it for an extended unnatural timescale which never happens with a ref on the pitch, and then come to the conclusion yeah ref you have clearly missed something obvious!!

West Ham fan here. Really surprised a VAR review was recommended, and I think the reaction of our players to it not being given in real time says it all.

I still stand by I think it's a penalty even though I seem to be in the minority here. Clear contact and it's definately enough to trip the West Ham player, one of those where if it was the other way round, no one will complain it's a free kick the other way.

However as it's been said on ref watch, maybe this is a good example of where a referee sticks by his decision, I want someone to ask Howard Webb, will a referee be marked down for rejecting an review because it feels like that could be the case as Webb has this high bar and your only going to go over if there has been a clear error so that must play on the referees mind. Apparently he was at the screen for quite a while so it will be interesting if we get too hear the audio on this one and see if the referee had to be persuaded or not.

It's a very sad day for football with Ten Hag getting the chop. His buffoonery kept me entertained, as did his level of ineptitude in guiding such an expensive squad to a negative goal difference last season. Alas, like Chelsea, the financial rules make it an absolute certainty they'll get back to the big time as they'll just keep spending until they fluke some return on investment. Although Southgate 'might' give us cause for more hilarity if he somehow blags the job
Ten Hag had more lives than me... and I should know, I've got 9! Comical, yet not unlikely, that it was VAR that finished him off with a good kicking

I was hoping he would at least be kept around for the Ipswich game as that felt destined to be our first win of the season. While it's always a shame to see some managers get the sack, I am also amazed he made it past last christmas
